If so, Floating EKA invites you to be part of their ‘I Inherit What You Lost’ artistic laboratory.

Floating EKA extend a warm invitation to artists aged 18 and above, originating from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia to apply. (For citizens of Russia and Belarus, please ensure you have a Schengen visa/residence permit in the EU and can travel to Poland.)

Together the partners proceed from the assumption that change begins in interaction.

The residency is divided into two three-week slots. The stay in Bucharest (I. Part) will focus on formulating a jointly developed project concept. The stay in Wroclaw (II. Part) will consist of testing the created ideas, concepts and scenarios.

What’s Next?, Ukraine, 2024 – final presentation: The results of the developed final project will be presented at the end of the final residency in Wroclaw, and, if the situation allows, at the final event of the What’s Next? project in Ukraine in November 2024.

The residency covers:

Train/bus transportation from participants’ cities to Bucharest, Wroclaw and Ukraine.

Accommodation in a shared rented apartment with your own room.

Salary of 1500 Euros (gross including per diems) for the residency in Bucharest.

A fee of 1000 Euro (gross including per diems) for a residency stay in Wroclaw.

Coverage of travel, accommodation and per diems for the presentation of results in Ukraine in November 2024 (to be confirmed, depending on the war situation).

tekhnē is a collaborative project in which six European organisations aim to explore the emancipatory potential of technology in music and sound art. By engaging critically and creatively with technology, and by putting the focus on the user rather than the developer, technologies and methodologies can be demystified and lead to more autonomous mindsets towards the tools around us.

For its research residencies, tekhnē welcomes artists, researchers, art educators and cultural workers working with and around autonomous and experimental approaches to technology, and reflections about what can be considered technology. The research residencies are considered space to explore a particular line of research, without the need to produce a concrete, final project.

Research residencies are hosted by one of three organisations, and applicants are encouraged to consider the specific expertise and conditions of each. Residency lengths vary between two and six weeks, between December 2023 and December 2024. Travel (within Europe), as well as accommodation and either a fee or per diem are provided. Residents will have the possibility to present their work and/or lead a workshop if desired.

GMEA offers two residencies of two weeks in 2024 in Albi, France. A per diem of 30€/day as well as technical and research support is offered.

TRAFO offers one residency of three weeks in December 2023 in Szczecin, Poland. A fee of 1000€ as well as technical and research support is offered. This residency specifically invites artists who would like to share their practice with the broader audience of Trafo contemporary art centre and students of the Academy of Arts.

Q-O2 offers six residencies of six weeks in 2024 in Brussels, Belgium. A per diem of 25€/day as well as technical and research support is offered.

Deadline: 30 September 2023

More info and apply: https://tekhne.website

Call for Theory Presentations for International Conference, ‘Devised Theatre / Dance Theatre’ (Poland)

Devised theatre is one of the most interesting and dynamic forms of contemporary performance. Initiated in the 1960s in the United States, Great Britain, and Europe (including Poland), devised theatre began to develop in other cultural spaces as well, and continues to modify its assumptions today. Centred around the search for alternative processes and experimental forms, devised theatre artists often lean toward non-artistic contexts and transgress the normative rules and boundaries of commercial, institutional and repertory theatre.

Organised by the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice and the Institute of Art Polish Academy of Sciences, the ‘Devised Theatre / Dance Theatre’ conference will be held in Katowice from 9-12 November 2023. Its goal is to reflect on devised theatre in relationship to contemporary dance and to create a platform for joint discussion between researchers, teachers of the practice, and artists on current practices in both arenas. The discussion will extend to the institutional support provided by curators and festivals. These practical sessions and workshops will serve to bring the participants together around their collective work on ‘inventing’ the idea, process, and final form of the performance.

With this call the conference organisers invite the participation of theoreticians and practitioners who are fascinated by the devising practice, i.e. the working methods and tools of devised theatre. Three panellists will be chosen, with the organisers covering the costs of their participation, including travel, accommodation and meals.

To apply send the form linked below to: devised_dance@am.katowice.pl

PALIMPSEST: Call for Creative Agents to Deliver Landscape Laboratories (Poland, Spain, Italy)

The word PALIMPSEST has its origins in the Ancient Greek παλίμψηστος (‘again’ + ‘scrape’) and describes the process of writing over papyrus: existing text was scraped and washed off, the surface re-smoothed, and the new literary material written on the same saved material.

PALIMPSEST is a research project that adopts this re-writing perspective to look at how resilient landscapes are constantly reshaped by natural processes and sustainable human practices (rooted ways of doing things). Slow incremental changes add to the valued characteristics of these landscapes. On the contrary unsustainable and short-sighted anthropic practices lead to a loss of value and threaten their livability.

The disequilibrium within human-nature interactions, particularly affecting climate and sustainability transition challenges presents an urgent call for action.

PALIMPSEST is looking for architects, designers, artists, and creative agents to work on imagining and experimenting with new ways to respond to environmental problems in three laboratories at pilot landscapes:

Łódź (PL), UNESCO city of films with a unique industrial heritage, fighting against multiple pollution problems (water, air, and soils) while regenerating industrial urban landscape to give birth to a new urban landscape.

Jerez de la Frontera (ES), an Andalusian wine cultural landscape challenged by the competition for land use between agriculture, tourism, and energy production.

Milan (IT), focusing on the landscape around the river Lambro shaped by ancient irrigation practices having access to a plurality of water sources and nowadays struggling with water scarcity issues never experienced before.

Selected applicants will participate in the design, organisation, and development of two residential workshops (one in 2024, and the second in 2025) in the pilot landscapes of their choice.

A fee of 10,000 euros is paid to each selected applicant (team or individual), which needs to cover international travel for residencies. Other costs of accommodation, boarding, traveling during the residency weeks, and logistics will be covered by PALIMPSEST consortium. An additional budget will be allocated to each pilot landscape to further develop and prototype the ideas developed during the residential workshops and follow-up activities as outputs of the collaboration between all involved parties.

Applicants must be established in one of the eligible countries: the Member States of the European Union, and countries associated with Horizon Europe.

Deadline: 18 September 2023

More info and apply: https://projetcoal.org/en/news-coal-en/palimpsest-creative-dialogues-open-call/

The project ‘Butterfly: Boosting environmental awareness in opera creation’ aims to create a new attitude towards sustainability in theatre and opera houses by exploring new green practices related to opera production and circulation. To do so, the project will go through the entire process of opera co-creation and co-production of a sustainable opera – from the opera commission to the public attendance and the sharing of the sustainable practices experimented, with a particular focus on engaging young audiences throughout the whole process.

With this open call Project Butterfly is looking for music composers to work on the brand-new sustainable opera. Three composers will be selected to write a three-act opera, in Italian, Polish and Finnish, dedicated to the theme of environmental sustainability. The opera is to be commissioned by Teatro Comunale di Modena (Italy), Opera Bałtycka, (Gdansk, Poland) and Opera Box (Helsinki, Finland).

The conception of the work will begin with a co-creation phase implemented by high school students in three project partner countries – Italy, Poland and Finland. The selected authors of the opera will work hand-in-hand with the creative team and the artistic directors of the project within two artistic residencies in Italy and Poland (May and October 2024). Finally, after two years of work, the project will culminate, in May 2025, in the premiere of the newly created opera in the partner theatres and online. The final production will strongly rely on advanced digital technologies and showcase the pathways for a more sustainable opera production.

Applicants must be legal residents in any of the countries participating in the Creative Europe Programme. Each composer will receive a 11,000 EUR gross fee. Travel and accommodation for the two residencies is also covered.

Deadline: 17 September 2023

More info and apply: https://projectbutterfly.eu/open-call/

Krakow Dance Theatre invites dance artists from Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania and Sweden to the first Krakow edition of the Dance Communication Lab, taking place 31 August – 4 September 2023.

DCL – Dance Communication Lab – is a space for the exchange of experiences between those who participate. The main purpose of the meeting is for six dancing people to get to know each other through improvisation, the most expressive and characteristic creative process in contemporary dance.

The main theme of the DCL will be translations and dialogue.

The DCL assumes a democratisation of the creative process, collaboration on equal terms of all the people taking part in this meeting. The DCL organised in Krakow envisages inviting a local artist representing a different field of art to collaborate. The process will be open to dialoguing between genres, languages and creative tools.

DCL will conclude with a show for the public as part of the dance presentation programme Rollercoaster: Collectors of Impressions on the stage of the Cricoteka Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor in Krakow.

The project is carried out within the framework of Beyond Front@: Bridging Periphery, a Creative Europe project (2023-2026) created by Central Europe Dance Theatre – CEDT (Hungary), Bunker (Slovenia), Hrvatski institut za pokret i ples - HIPP (Croatia), Krakow Dance Theatre (Poland), M Studio (Romania) and Vitlycke – CPA (Sweden) to foster local development of the contemporary dance fields.

The DCL is aimed at dance professionals, people who dance, choreograph and practise movement activities who are from Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania or Sweden.

Accommodation, travel costs, catering and a fee of 150 EUR are provided by the organisers.

Deadline: 9 July 2023

More info and apply: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfnDz2B4iR1h-O54k_85PcULA-S2EV6JkqvLor_LUOPLVOf0Q/viewform

STUDIO2 / ITI Germany: Performance Residency for Artists Based in Germany and Poland

From 31 July – 13 August 2023 Materia in Łódź, and from 17-30 August 2023, STUDIO2 of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in Berlin will each be hosting one artistic research residency. The residencies are aimed at individual artists or groups of up to two artists from the field of dance, theatre and performance (including interdisciplinary work). The residencies will enable open artistic research on a self-selected theme at each unique partner venue and the use of the specific local organisational infrastructure for the artistic work.

The aim of this cooperation project is to combine the working experiences and methods of the participating artists and cultural organisations in Poland and in Germany. The mutual exchange from different perspectives will enable the artists and organisations to expand their knowledge of what sustainable transnational support structures for artist residencies can look like. Each residency project should therefore include some participatory sequences based on the individual approach of the artists in residency, such as but not limited to public sharings, discussion rounds, digital publications, or workshop formats.

Moreover, there will be a joint conference in October in Łódź, which shall give the artists the opportunity to reconsider the work process during the residencies and get into an exchange with the other residents and the participating organisations.

Both residencies include:

The residency artist(s) (up to two) will receive a compensation of 500 Euros each.

The budget for accommodation and stay for each artist comes to 550 Euros.

A mobility grant of up to 150 Euros each is offered for those who will have to travel to Berlin or Łodz.

Deadline: 15 June 2023

More info and apply: https://studio2.iti-germany.de/en/residency_programme

Polish Composers’ Union (Poland) in partnership with Berg Orchestra (Czechia), Waves Bratislava (Slovakia), and UMZE Association (Hungary) invite composers from the Visegrad Group countries to collaborate on the ‘Renewable Music - V4 Composers for sustainability’ project in the framework of the Creative Europe programme for 2023-2025.

The main objective of the project is to revive international cooperation after the COVID-19 pandemic and to raise awareness of the growing climate and energy crisis by developing environmentally friendly practices in the music sector. Four new pieces of music inspired by the idea of ‘renewability’ will be commissioned from selected composers representing the Visegrad Group countries. The commissioned pieces will be performed at four different concerts (in Warsaw, Prague, Bratislava, and Budapest), each by a local ensemble, whose members will be joined by musicians from partner countries as part of the international artist exchange programme. The concerts will take place in locations that will be adapted to the unique conditions of open-air concert sites, reflecting each location’s bond with the surrounding environment. The concerts will be accompanied by workshops, masterclasses, open rehearsals and lectures. The project will be summed up by an international conference devoted to the ideas of ecology and sustainable development in music.

The call is open to composers up to 35 years of age (born after 1 March 1988) representing the Visegrad Group countries (citizens of Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary, living in the country and abroad).

The new works for chamber music ensemble of 7 up to 10 instruments to be chosen from: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon / French horn, trumpet, trombone / small percussion instruments / violin, viola, cello, double bass with optional use of electronics, will be commissioned from selected composers. Expected length is approximately 15-20 minutes, scores and parts of composition to be submitted by 31 March 2024.

Selected composers will be invited to take part in a series of workshops with music and ecology experts from June – September 2024. The programme will include visiting concert sites in all partner countries as well as meetings with local ensembles’ representatives, which will facilitate working on new commissions.

The composers will lead masterclasses in all partner countries, sharing their newly gained knowledge and describing their creative process. They will also participate in rehearsals and concerts in all partner countries, supervising local premieres of their works.

The organisers cover all travel costs (train/bus tickets, accommodation, subsistence). Participating composers receive a commission fee of 4000 EUR.

Deadline: 15 June 2023

More info and apply: https://renmus.eu/index.php/for-composers/

Open Call for Unsound Festival (Poland)

Taking place between 1-8 October 2023 in Kraków, Poland, the theme for the next edition of Unsound Festival is DADA. Within this framework, Unsound will include an Artificially Intelligent Artistic Director (AIAD) as a member of the 2023 curatorial team.

Founded around 1915 in opposition to the brutality of WWI, new forms of nationalism and capitalism, the Dada movement rejected ideas of progress, logic and rationality in favour of nonsense, outrage and radicalism – words and concepts Unsound will riff on while creating the 2023 programme, including music, sound, performance, visual arts and discourse.

As part of the DADA theme, the AIAD has created an open call for a series for the music and performance programme ‘In(ter)ventions’, with four rules:

The in(ter)vention must last no longer than 12 minutes, and no less than 2 minutes.

The in(ter)vention will be placed on a night of other sound or music based shows, but the work does not need to consist of music or sound – although, of course, it can!

British Council: UK-Poland Arts Scoping Grants

The British Council has opened applications for scoping grants in preparation for a proposed UK/Poland season in 2025. In order to start developing potential activity, they are offering grants of £2500 to start conversations and establish partnerships.

The grants are primarily for travel-related costs (flights, train, accommodation), to support travel related costs for representatives of UK and Polish organisations in the arts and creative industries to undertake scoping visits to each other’s country. British Council are keen to support the creation of new work, new collaborations, and innovative activity. All applicants should have a clear project in mind which would then be collaboratively developed through this exchange. The project must be for ultimate presentation in Poland, or in Poland and UK, but not UK only.

In late 2023 and 2024 British Council are hoping to offer additional funding to support the strongest collaborations which best meet the aims of the planned Season. Projects should be delivered by at least one UK-based organisation and at least one organisation based in Poland. Only one of the two organisations can apply for the grant. British Council will not fund legacy activity or recurrent costs on existing projects. There are a total of 25 grants available this year. The travel should take place between February and May 2023.

In certain circumstances, the British Council might consider a non-travel application if there is strong evidence that the grant would be put to good use in developing the project idea without physically visiting the country.

The grants are open to arts and cultural organisations, large or small, in both UK and Poland. If the proposed project is clearly shared between two organisations then only one of the organisations can apply for the grant. The grants are not open to individual artists, although a curator may be considered if the project is strong enough.

Deadline: 4 January 2023

More info and apply: https://www.britishcouncil.pl/en/programmes/uk-poland-season-2025/arts-scoping-grants

FestivALT: Call for Works Engaging with Contemporary Jewish Poland

FestivALT is a Jewish-led multidisciplinary cultural organisation that uses contemporary art, performance and activism to engage the complexities of Jewish history, memory, identity, and culture in contemporary Poland. Since 2017, it has produced an annual summer festival of contemporary art and civic engagement in Kraków, Poland, and has now expanded to include year-round programming. The seventh summer edition of the festival will take place 23 June - 2 July 2023.

The festival now invites applications from artists from Poland and around the world in the fields of visual art, music, performance, and activist intervention that engage with contemporary Jewish Poland. The festival has no uniform formula for judging proposals, but has developed a practice of collective deliberation to assemble a programme of projects that are both complementary and synergistically related. By way of general guidelines:

The festival is very interested in good art about Jewish concerns, and not very interested in ‘Jewish art’ as some ready-made aesthetic or category of activity.

Submissions need not be specifically about Poland, but should be relevant to or gain new meaning in a Polish / Central-Eastern European context.

The festival is drawn to projects that experiment with form and content and also investigate or challenge understandings of Jewishness.

They welcome work at every stage of development; important projects in the past have resulted from collaboration between artists and the festival’s curatorial team.

Selected works receive:

A presentation of your project during the 2023 FestivALT summer programme in Krakow, Poland.

Artistic Fee (TBD).

Accommodation in Kraków for 1-3 nights.

Travel costs reimbursement (if within Europe) or contribution towards flight (in other cases).

Materials budget coverage (TBD).

Deadline: 15 December 2022

More info and apply: https://www.festivalt.com/festivalt-open-call/
