Urbane Künste Ruhr: Artist Residency, 'Healing Complex' (Germany)

Urbane Künste Ruhr in Bochum invites artists who are interested in working with local networks and public meeting places to take part in a three-month residency (April – June 2024) for its upcoming 2024 season. The residency is part of the Healing Complex project. Two positions will be allocated for the residency. Interested artists can apply individually or jointly; applications from collectives are also very welcome.

Since 3 June 2022, Urbane Künste Ruhr has been running the project Healing Complex (2018–ongoing) in Gelsenkirchen, which was initiated by the artist Irena Haiduk based on the model of antique building complexes that combined art and healing. Irena Haiduk’s artistic practice links the symbolic capital of the art field with real economies, which is particularly relevant in a post-industrial region such as the Ruhr area.

The residency at the Healing Complex offers the opportunity to intensively explore the project, the existing networks and the urban-social context in Gelsenkirchen Erle over a period of twelve weeks. The stay is divided into two phases: the first six weeks lend themselves to an examination of the location and offer the opportunity to use the Healing Complex for research and as a studio in order to develop a situation-specific project. This conception phase is followed by a six-week implementation period, during which the previously conceived project is to be realised on-site and addressed to a broad public.

Based on the results of the first two exhibition phases at the Healing Complex in 2022 and 2023, the guest artist residency offers the option of exploring forms of networks and testing the opening and activation of artistic institutions and urban spaces. However, the Healing Complex is just as well suited for an examination of the architecture of the modern church building, which was erected in 1963, as well as the history of the Erle district, whose origins are shaped by mining.

The guest artist residency is aimed at professionally working international and national artists and collectives who are interested in social, situational and site-specific contexts in their artistic work.

The residency offers:

A work and production residency from 2 April – 30 June 2024 with content supervision and close ties to Urbane Künste Ruhr.

A guest artist’s fee of €4500 gross.

Accommodation in Gelsenkirchen will be provided.

Costs for arrival and departure will be covered once.

Travel by public transport for research purposes can be reimbursed.

Shared use of the office space on site (Cranger Straße 338, 45891 Gelsenkirchen).

Deadline: 5 January 2024

More info and apply: https://www.urbanekuensteruhr.de/en/news/open-call-zu-gast-im-healing-complex

Supergau: Open Call for Artistic projects for Outdoor Space (Austria)

Supergau festival in Salzburg in Austria is calling for artistic projects in outdoor space.

Supergau is an imaginary landscape, a culturally primeval landscape. It is temporary, and during the festival it lies like a second layer over the existing topography of one of the five Salzburg regions [Gaue] (Flachgau, Lungau, Pinzgau, Pongau, Tennengau).

Supergau is freed from the supposed dominance of the city with its programmed cultural spaces, freed from municipal museums, theatres, cabaret stages, that need to be filled by a target audience. Freed from the concept of the public space because Supergau knows only landscape. Supergau is surface and depth at the same time. Supergau has forest - and meadowscapes, mountainscapes, housescapes, asphalt- and concrete-scapes. All these and other landscapes can become a stage at Supergau, an artistic field of action. Supergau is a festival that takes place exclusively outdoors.

The biennial festival celebrated its premiere in Flachgau in 2021 and transformed Lungau into a Supergau for contemporary arts in 2023. The festival will continue in Pinzgau in 2025.

Supergau invites artists to take time for the festival, so it facilitates residencies which offer the opportunity of working on site, researching and exchanging ideas. The whole institution, the development of a dramaturgy and the planning of content in collaboration with participants is an essential component of the festival.

This open call marks the beginning of Supergau, which culminates in the 10-day festival in late May / early June 2025.

The festival is looking for:

Artistic contributions outdoors.

Artists from various disciplines who will join them in exploring the question of what the countryside can do as an art- and as production-space, what the city cannot do and what new forms of encounter and dialogue we can create here.

Artists engaged with the questions, problems and potentials of this region.

Spatial art that can cover entire meadows, forests, lakes, squares or motorways, for example.

Cross-disciplinary works that enter into collaborations with visitors, residents, local initiatives or associations.

Mixed teams with participants from fields other than art are possible (e.g. from science, agriculture, health, education, crafts).

The total budget for the open call amounts to 220,000 Euro. The artistic directors, together with a panel of experts, will select projects from within two categories:

A: up to € 15,000.

B: up to € 30,000.

These two categories are simply a rough guide, with no details concerning quality or importance of the individual works. The above-mentioned flat-rate contributions are gross amounts, and must include fees, production and implementation costs, and travel expenses.

Supergau will also provide board and lodgings for the duration of the residencies, and invites the participating artists to stay overnight in the Lungau during the entire festival (in May/June 2024).

Deadline: 12 February 2024

More info and apply: https://www.supergau.org/en/open-call/

SODAS 2123: Nordic-Baltic Residency, ‘The Festivity’ (Lithuania)

Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association invites artists, activists and researchers in the fields of art and humanities, whose artistic practice includes exploring celebration as phenomenon, its various forms and elements, to a granted three-month residency programme in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The Festivity Residency focuses on the research and artistic interpretation of the celebration phenomenon. In this programme, the residency infrastructure is a space providing opportunities for investigation and interpretation on how traditions are binding communities together and how social infrastructures are created in relational processes.

During the residency the following questions are raised: What can festivals mean and offer in non-festive times? How can we celebrate in an ethical, sustainable and sensitive manner? How can we celebrate to support each other, to strengthen our bonds of friendship and to discover multiple meanings in celebratory practices?

The residency programme will take a space at SODAS 2123 cultural complex. It is a self-governing community-based space, operated and curated by the Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association. It brings together creators and researchers from different fields whose practices are based on experimentation and development of unexpected formats.

After selection process, six artists will be invited to live and work focusing on their chosen festivities during the spring, summer and autumn residency periods. Available residency periods:

1 March – 31 May 2024.

1 June – 31 August 2024.

1 September – 30 November 2024.

Vogelklang Soundcamp Festival: Production Residencies (Germany)

The organisation Kunstverein Global Forest in St. Georgen, Germany is looking to award two project-based, 2-3 month artist residencies for research and artistic production. The residencies will take place after individual arrangements between February - early May 2024. The results of the residencies will be presented to the public at the annual Vogelklang Soundcamp on 4 and 5 May 2024.

The Vogelklang Soundcamp is a locally and independently organised event which is also linked to a global network of different actors. It aims to explore the behaviour and habitat of our feathered friends through art and creative contributions. The event was inspired by environmentalist and broadcaster Chris Baines and is part of the International Dawn Chorus Day, which he founded. Over the course of the festival weekend, May 6-7, various temporary sound camps around the world will connect to form one global acoustic network. Through the cooperation of all sound camps, including the Vogelklang Soundcamp in the Black Forest, a 24-hour livestream of continuous morning chirping is created. Thus, along the sunrise a worldwide phenomenon can be experienced: the morning song of the birds.

In addition to the 24-hour bird concert produced collectively by the many sound camps, an on-site and transmedia festival programme will take place in the realm of the Vogelklang Soundcamp in the Black Forest. This includes workshops, lectures, installations, performances, etc. – many of which are interactive and designed for participation.

The two residencies are intended to enable artists to develop a project- and theme-related work and to present it at the Vogelklang Soundcamp. During the production process, the artists will be supported by the Global Forest team. Generally, all artistic media that can be realised within the framework of the festival are welcome. The work should show a special perspective on or direct engagement with nature – in particular with birds or topics from this context. Sociopolitical issues can be individually and artistically in focus. At the core of the Vogelklang Soundcamp is the attempt and claim to assign subjectivity to nature and to engage with it as a biopolitical agent.

Both residencies include a rent-free stay at Kunstverein Global, a scholarship of 1000€ per month, the reimbursement of material costs up to max. 500€, the reimbursement of travel costs up to max. 250€, as well as free food and accommodation during the Vogelklang Soundcamp.

Deadline: 10 December 2023

More info and apply: https://global-forest.com/programm/open-call-vogelklang-soundcamp-7

In the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, a joint project of The Schaufler Foundation and TUD Dresden University of Technology. Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, launched in 2019, was initiated with the goal of exploring and elucidating the complex relationships among humans, machines, technology and the world from the perspective of the arts, humanities and social sciences. The Lab consists of the two pillars Schaufler Kolleg@TU Dresden (a research training group) and Schaufler Residency@TU Dresden.

The first funding phase (2020-2024) focused on Artificial Intelligence as factor and consequence of societal and cultural change. In the second funding phase of the Lab (2024–2027) the central topic is ‘Data↔Worlds. Sociotechnical and cultural syntheses of new realities’. Fellows from the humanities and social sciences and the resident artists will conduct research on this theme in close exchange with scientists from the university’s STEM disciplines (mathematics, natural sciences and engineering).

The Lab’s residency programme offers committed and internationally active artists or artist groups the unique opportunity to conduct artistic research on ‘Data↔Worlds’. It addresses artists or artist groups from the fields of media art, conceptual art, performance, etc. During the residency, the artist or artist groups are part of TUD’s scientific community of researchers and students and may draw on resources for artistic and creative productions, both of TUD and of its cooperation partners. The partners are Dresden University of Fine Arts, Ars Electronica Linz, and Hellerau – European Center for the Arts, etc.

The Schaufler Residency@TU Dresden includes:

PRAKSIS: ‘Party as Form’ Residency Exploring Social Gathering (Norway)

The PRAKSIS residency Party as Form invites a multidisciplinary group of thinkers and makers to explore the craft of social gathering from 27 May - 24 June 2024.

Party as Form takes the craft of celebration as the starting point for a residency that blends cultural theory with current experiments in curating, social practice and performance. This four-week residency offers up to four Oslo-based and two international artists, art workers and other creative, critical, and cultural practitioners the opportunity to work with Kelly Lloyd and Shannon Stratton on collective research and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Lloyd and Shannon seek to convene a group of practitioners interested in the party as a form, whether this is already the foundation of their practice or a potential lens through which to continue their research. The residency will be a think-tank-style sharing of ideas and resources that allows for both group and solo planning and ideas-testing. In the process participants will look in detail at the history, aesthetics, labour, and conventions of parties, from the intimate to the public, the religious to the secular. Topics may include (but not necessarily be limited to) liminality, community, hosting, the formation of publics, spectacle, utopias, leisure, play, pleasure, refusal, ritual and the commons.

The group will collectively plan a schedule at the residency’s outset, including daily group meetings and activities (such as readings, discussions, visits to relevant spaces in Oslo, networking events, communal meals, leisure outings, and deployments) alongside unstructured time for independent reflection and research. In the first week, residents will participate in PRAKSIS’s customary ‘Meet the Residents’ event, informally introducing themselves to the rest of the group and the Oslo arts community.

The residency provides:

An active, facilitated programme connected with the residency topic.

A communal work space at PRAKSIS, in the centre of Oslo.

3000 NOK (~250 EUR) for two international artists.

Comfortable accommodation for 2 international artists, sharing a flat with Kelly Lloyd and Shannon Stratton. Oslo-based residents will continue to stay at their local address.

Two group dinners with invited guests and simple lunches on weekdays held at PRAKSIS HQ.

Deadline: 26 November 2023

More info and apply: https://www.praksisoslo.org/residencieslist/r27-partyasform

Associazione Demetra: ‘Nutrimenti_habitat’ Residency for Participatory Projects (Italy)

Associazione Demetra, an organisation active for over 18 years in the field of supporting creativity in all its expressive forms and in the creation of innovative formats in the cultural sphere, in collaboration with Indisciplinarte, as part of the C.U.R.A. Centro Umbro di Residenze Artistiche, is promoting the Nutrimenti_habitat creativo 2023 residency call.

The underlying idea of this residency has always been to sow the seeds for daring projects to grow together in the future. From the recent editions of the Nutrimenti residency, ideas have emerged that, developed in synergy with artists, creatives, and professionals from Associazione Demetra, along with partners and supporters, have given life to the ‘Concert from the Balconies’ event, the participatory artistic project ‘Domestic Museum’, and the programme aimed at the younger generation ‘GenZ’.

Therefore, this call is open to artists of any background, preferably with an interdisciplinary inclination, who have already realised or are interested in creating participatory artistic projects and performative and/or installation interventions in unconventional urban settings, with a particular focus on public spaces.

Through this call, up to a maximum of 3 artists without age or geographical restrictions will be selected. They will reside in Terni (Italy) from 4-17 December 2023, and will work both as a team and independently, with the support of local creatives and Associazione Demetra volunteers.

The overarching theme for this year’s gathering is ‘the INVISIBLE’. Starting from this broad theme and its multiple possible interpretations, the selected artists will be invited to explore and experiment in a creative way to impact the urban and human context, to disrupt the normal course of daily life, to create communities, to overcome the alienation that separates us, to take risks, and to sow the seeds for the future.

Associazione Demetra will provide the following for each selected artist:

Shared housing from 4-17 December 2023.

A gross contribution of €600.

A €200 contribution for meals.

A travel reimbursement of up to €200.

Logistical and organisational support.

Deadline: 15 November 2023

More info and apply: https://www.associazionedemetra.it/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Nutrimenti2023_Open-Call.pdf

Are you an artist passionate about exploring the heritage that reminded us of challenging times in the 20th century in Eastern Europe, Eastern Partnership countries, and Central Asia? If so, Floating EKA invites you to be part of their ‘I Inherit What You Lost’ artistic laboratory.

Floating EKA extend a warm invitation to artists aged 18 and above, originating from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia to apply. (For citizens of Russia and Belarus, please ensure you have a Schengen visa/residence permit in the EU and can travel to Poland.)

Within this project, participants will uncover the hidden gems of ‘dissonant heritage’ within their cities, offering you, the artists, a platform to craft meaningful and impactful artworks.

At the core of the initiative lies a three-day Artistic Laboratory in Szczecin, Poland, set for the end of March 2024. This will bring together activists, researchers, opinion leaders, and 10-12 artists from Eastern Partnership countries and Central Asia, who will be selected through an open call.

Throughout the Virtual Lab, artists will collaborate closely with project curators to refine and develop their artistic concepts, preparing them for execution and presentation at the exhibition in Szczecin upon arrival.

Selected artists will receive support for their travel expenses to Szczecin (Poland), as well as accommodation and meal provisions throughout the three-day artistic laboratory. Floating EKA are also offering micro-funding of up to 100 EUR to each artist to support production costs.

What’s Next?: ‘Performing Togetherness’ Residency Call (Romania)

Performing Togetherness is a new type of laboratory-residency developed by Gabriela Tudor Foundation as a result of the crisis within the cultural sector following the pandemic period and the war in Ukraine. It is a platform for research, cultural dialogue, reflection and innovation where participants are invited to meet and confront different points of view about culture and life and discover a new cultural routine based on the concept of togetherness, seen as the quality of working and belonging to a collective practice.

The laboratory aims to foster creativity and interdisciplinarity looking into the future, (re)imagining new ways of performativity, culture and life by creating a space for dialogue, sharing of different artistic practices, exchange and collaboration but also for reflection on (post)war in Europe. Makers from different disciplines, cultural researchers but also experts in biodiversity are invited in a collective co-authorship process, to slow-down their activity and allow time for reflection and experiment, recording emotions and memories of people in relation to nature, city and life.

The laboratory-residency is open to interested mid-career participants with experience in collaborative practices from Austria, Germany, Poland, Romania and Ukraine who are willing to think, reflect and connect with the nature, the city of Bucharest, people’s emotions as well as engaging in a critical thinking process about a greener future. A total number of 8 participants will be invited for 3 weeks to Romania to meet, discuss and develop new ideas and projects on the proposed themes of the residency.

Following a 3-day introductory period at the Black Sea in the middle of the nature, each participant will be invited to lead the group for one day, sharing their own artistic practice, lead conversation and debates, propose films for watching together, experiment and test the concept of togetherness and slowness and what does it mean to create and live nowadays. In the last days of the laboratory-residency, participants will be encouraged to generate in small groups new ideas on the proposed themes. On the last day of the residency, the participants will choose collectively one project idea that was generated during the laboratory. The project selected (including up to 3 participants) will be offered an additional 3-week research time in order to further test and develop the project in October 2024 in a residency in Bucharest at AREAL and Pavilion Goethe Institute.

The residency covers travel costs from the city of residence to Bucharest (return ticket up to 300 Euro/each participant) and accommodation in a shared apartment (with single and twin rooms); a fee of 1000 Euro (gross amount) for the laboratory period in May 2024; a fee of 1000 Euro (gross amount, including per diem) for the additional research 3-week residency in October 2024 (fee per person/ up to 3 participants).

Deadline: 5 December 2023

More info and apply: https://dans.ro/whats-next-performing-togetherness-residency-call/

CODE 2024: Open Call for a Co-creation Project on Digital Rights

Are you an artist, designer, researcher, software designer or developer? Or are you working in marketing, law, technology, policymaking or politics? Are you interested in human rights and equality? Are you open to working on collaborative projects that can speak to the imagination of a wider audience and inspire them to think about their digital agency? Regardless of what you do, if you are concerned about our digital rights and the lack of agency over the platforms and devices we use, CODE 2024 are looking for you.

With this open call they invite creatives, professional and non-professional artists, and concerned citizens living in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany to embark on a six-month journey of dialogue, critical discussion, and co-creation about digital rights. Between January and June 2024 you will work with other participants on group artworks to be presented at international festivals and events.

CODE was initiated in 2021 as a response to growing concerns that we are losing agency over the digital tools and platforms we use on a daily basis. The organisers believe in the need for better laws and legislation that will protect us as digital citizens and consumers. By creating creative and artistic interventions, their aim is to influence public policy on a national and international level and to create awareness for issues at hand.

Selected participants will work closely together in a co-creation process. CODE consists of a series of online and onsite events, including:

Kickoff meeting (online).

Three workshops (hybrid).

One symposium (online).

2-3-day hackathon (onsite).

Group meetings and feedback sessions (both online and onsite).

Online exhibition.

Presentations at festivals and events.

The events are spread over several months: from late January till June, with presentations of the project’s outcome expected in September. Group artworks will also be conceived over the six-month period from January to June.

There is a small stipend for groups that produce a work for international presentations and for the online exhibition. Travel costs and accommodation to attend the 2-3-day hackathon will be covered.

Deadline: 8 January 2024

More info and apply: https://www.werktank.org/residencies

European Geosciences Union: Arts and Science Residency (Austria)

The European Geosciences Union Artist in Residence programme, which provides artists and scientists with opportunities to exchange ideas during the EGU annual meeting, is back again for their General Assembly in 2024. EGU now welcome applications from science-artists for two residencies at EGU24, taking place in Vienna, Austria from 14-19 April 2024.

EGU’s annual General Assembly brings together geoscientists from all over the world for a meeting that covers all disciplines of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences, not just for those attending on-site, but also for people attending virtually around the world. The Artist in Residence programme provides science-artists with a unique opportunity to interact directly with a broad range of researchers and subjects in this exciting and dynamic setting, and to examine their own work through a new perspective. The collaboration of the science-artists also benefits researchers who can learn about new and creative ways of making their work accessible.

Given the unique situation of this residency, EGU are looking for applications from curious and open-minded creatives, either scientists who also work as artists, or artists with some experience engaging with science, to apply to spend the week with them in Vienna, Austria. They welcome applications from artists who work in any kind of creative field (although the location does come with some practical limitations for those who work in audio formats). The residency will involve the production of new creative works generated during the week of the meeting and inspired by the research or researchers of EGU24.

The residency takes place at the conference centre, the Austria Center Vienna, and lasts for the full week of the meeting. Please note that having thousands of scientists in the building produces reasonable noise levels and that art that either requires a quiet environment or generates a fair amount of noise itself may not work well. The EGU provides a stipend of around €1200 to cover accommodation and contribute towards travel expenses, as well as free registration to the meeting.

Deadline: 27 November 2023

More info and apply: https://www.egu.eu/news/982/apply-to-be-one-of-our-artists-in-residence-for-egu24/
