Art Hub Copenhagen: Visual Arts Residency (Denmark)

As an institution, Art Hub Copenhagen aims to create networks. The Art Hub Residency therefore actively aims to create and expand artists’ networks both nationally and internationally.

Focusing on networking, contemplation, and production, Art Hub Residency features a studio, a monthly fee, a production budget, and a programme of development and feedback based on the needs of each artist. The programme features meetings with selected curators/mentors and a programme of visits to selected art institutions in Denmark.

As well as the importance of networking, Art Hub Residency provides artists with time for contemplation and/or production. There is no requirement to produce work during the residency; the time can thus be tailored to suit the process of each artist. It might involve research and studies, trying out ideas, or actual production. There is also the option of a short stay at the Danish Art Workshops.

Art Hub Residency is both for recently graduated artists and other artists, for whom the residency programme could make a difference in terms of establishing and expanding their practice nationally and internationally. The residency lasts for five months from February to June 2024.

Alongside studio space and mentoring, artists receive a fee of DKK 15,000 per month (~2000 EUR) and a production fee of DKK 20,000 (~2700 EUR).

Applications are open to graduated artists who are EU/EØS citizens or either in possession of a permanent residence permit or entitled in some other way to reside in Denmark for a period of five months.

Deadline: 22 November 2023

More info and apply: https://arthubcopenhagen.net/en/open-call-art-hub-residency-spring-2023/

European Digital Deal: Call for Residency Artists

European Digital Deal is a three-year investigation co-funded by Creative Europe into how the accelerated, yet at times unconsidered adoption of new technologies – such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain and algorithmic processing – can alter or undermine democratic processes.

As one part of its programme of activities, European Digital Deal is now calling on artists interested in exploring the deep entanglement between new technologies and democracy to apply for one of 12 residencies. Each of the 12 residencies is linked to one consortium partner:

Ars Electronica (AT).

Gluon (BE).

Kersnikova Institute (SI).

LABoral (ES).

Onassis Stegi (EL).

Pro Progessione (HU).

Sineglossa (IT).

Center for the Promotion of Science (CPN)(RS).

The Culture Yard (DK).

Waag (NL) is offering 2 residencies.

Zaragoza City of Knowledge Foundation (FZC) / Etopia (ES).

Artists are invited to investigate a range of topics, from the notion of truth in the information age shaped by algorithms, biases in AI, techno-anxiety, and the digital divides arising as a result of digitalisation to new forms of surveillance, intelligence, living, citizenship, or work.

Eligibility:

Individual artists or duos/groups/collectives.

Artists that have produced enough artworks for the jury to assess their artistic experience. Previous experience collaborating with companies and/or research institutions will be valued but is not a condition for participation.

Citizens or permanent residents of all EU and non-EU countries.

The selected artists will receive a 25,000 EUR grant to complete their project, the support of the group of experts around each residency, access to mentorship through an incubation programme, and the chance to show their work at Ars Electronica Festival, Onassis Stegi, and Laboral among many other locations.

Deadline: 30 November 2023

More info and apply: https://ars.electronica.art/eudigitaldeal/en/

Nyskaben: Participatory Art Residency for Artists and Cultural Practitioners (Denmark)

Nyskaben is organising a residency from 1-30 June 2024 for 4 artists/cultural practitioners (A/CP) in Lundø, Denmark.

Nyskaben invite A/CP that work with participatory art within their own artistic practice, or in other cultural fields such as social work, youth work, formal and informal education to apply. The participatory aspect can be in the development process (i.e. working with people throughout the research and creative process) or the end product (i.e. audience participation or performative games).

The call prioritises A/CP that work within the fields of performance and visual art, and who address environmental questions of any kind in their work.

Individual applications are recommended, but Nyskaben will allow applications from duos or groups with good justification.

Only people legally residing in a Creative Europe country can apply. As the residency promotes international collaboration and takes place in Denmark, A/CP residing in Denmark cannot apply.

Nyskaben specifically encourage A/CP who want to boost their activities after having taken up a parental leave to apply. There is the opportunity for families (partners, children) to join in the residency for 2 of the 4 weeks.

The residency offers:

Free accommodation in a small but fully equipped vacation house.

Travel allowance of 350 - 700 EUR per person, based on distance and means of transportation.

A daily allowance of 25 EUR per day for food expenses, local transport, etc.

A communal workspace (no black box).

The residents will get the opportunity to learn from each other and work closely with local artists and cultural practitioners in a small rural environment surrounded by the beautiful sea of the Danish Limfjord. About 150 people inhabit the peninsula and many locals are consciously invested in strengthening their relation to the landscape of Lundø, which is considered a national treasure struggling with ecological challenges.

Deadline: 15 September 2023

More info and apply: https://www.nyskaben.com

Dialekt: Call for Nordic Residency Exchange (Denmark, Sweden, Canada)

With the newly established project Dialekt - An exploration of international co-creation in audiovisual artistic expression and performance, three partners across three countries come together in order to present a call-out for artists to travel, develop a project in residency, and perform at each location – at Sound Art Lab in Struer, Denmark, Inkonst in Malmö, Sweden, and Eastern Bloc in Montreal, Canada.

Dialekt grew out of a curiosity for exploration of co-creation across sectors, aiming to foster a framework that can allow artists active in the fields of digital art and experimental sonic practices to experience fruitful exchanges and professional development within their own practice whilst connecting with institutions, collaborators and audiences in regions that they otherwise wouldn’t necessarily have access to.

The focus of innovation for this project lies very much in the forefront for all of the involved partners. Both Sound Art Lab, Inkonst and Eastern Bloc, are all pushing forward-thinking projects in and around their overlapping programmes of digital arts, sonic arts and electronic music, and constantly support implementing changes for developing new techniques and tools in these areas. Although the chosen artists that will be selected for this programme around exchange and co-creation might have different backgrounds, workflows and strategies, they will be tied together by striving towards exploring new technologies, aesthetics, shapes and forms within their artistic practice.

Interdisciplinary and sound artists, audiovisual performers, experimental electronic composers and musicians are invited to submit proposals of projects currently in development to be completed, or improvisational practices that could be further worked upon during three shorter residency periods, all concluding in live performance opportunities across three countries. Individuals residing in Denmark, Sweden, and in the province of Quebec can apply.

Selected applicants will spend a total of about 3 weeks in residence divided between the different centres in order to further develop and build upon live performance structures and explore audiovisual tools and techniques, to ultimately publicly present their work during different stages of their project as part of public events. Travel and accommodation will be covered between all three locations, and artists will be received a total compensation of 2100$ CAD / 16,895 SEK / 10,803 DKK including per diem covering meal
LINA - Learning, Interacting and Networking in Architecture: Call for Projects (Denmark)

LINA is a European platform: a network of 32 institutions working at the intersection of architecture and other fields related to spatial culture. LINA works to promote emerging thinkers and practitioners. Its goal is to steer design and building processes towards regenerative practices and principles of de-growth.

With this open call LINA are looking for innovative individuals and collectives who apply their theoretical and practical knowledge to better our common future. LINA aims to give a platform to those who have not yet broken through to an international audience, and are not yet established in their respective fields. Age is not a limit. Only residents of the 40 Creative Europe countries can apply.

The call seeks those wanting to participate in mentoring, teaching, residencies, research and writing, and who want to present their work, and develop meaningful programmes. Though travel is not always a necessity, LINA are looking for those interested in international collaboration.

Authors apply with a project. Those selected as LINA fellows will present their work at the LINA Conference in Copenhagen from 9-10 October 2023. There, they’ll be invited to match up with LINA members, invited to take part in their activities, and become part of the LINA Architecture Programme 2023–24.

The platform will cover travel within Europe (up to 350 EUR) and accommodation costs for LINA fellows who are invited to attend the LINA Conference in Copenhagen. Platform members will cover travel within Europe, accommodation costs, and provide honoraria for participants they’ve invited to take part in their events.

Deadline: 1 August 2023

More info and apply: https://lina.community/open-call/

BIRCA: Residency Lab for New Ecological Performing Arts Around the Baltic Sea (Denmark)

BIRCA Baltic Sea will invite 6 performing artists placed around the Baltic Sea (Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) to a joint residency of 2 weeks taking place 25 September – 8 October 2023. The residency seeks to expand on participants’ current practice with a focus on the health of the planet. The aim is to create new solo, shared and collaborative performance works, with a focus on exchange and collaboration.

The residencies will focus on some of these questions: What does ecological art mean? What methods are being developed in this new field? How does the new performing art engage in dialogue with the ‘audience’ and society? From an artistic research perspective the participants will co-creatively address local climate issues in the Nordic and Baltic countries as well as the global crisis. They will – also in co-creation – develop ideas and themes that can lead to future collaborations between participants to create joint artistic manifestations, soft resistance, and visions for future co-existence around the Baltic Sea. All performance art should be created with a limited negative impact on the world’s nature and with care for all species and lifeforms on the planet.

BIRCA Baltic Sea is taking place on Bornholm/Denmark and is led by Susanne Danig/BIRCA in collaboration with Danish choreographer and climate activist Linh Le – they will select participants and plan the residency. Linh will also present a workshop at the residency. The residency is supported by Nordic Culture Points residency programme, and there will be a second round taking place in May 2024.

Accommodation in single rooms, food and travel expenses (also for green traveling) will be covered and the organisers will pay a fee of 1500€ per participant. They will also introduce the participants to local institutions and sites and cover expenses for this.

Deadline: 6 June 2023

More info and apply: https://www.birca.org/en/call-for-birca-baltic-sea-23

CERN / Copenhagen Contemporary: Collide Copenhagen 2023 (Switzerland / Denmark)

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva, and Copenhagen Contemporary (CC) are proud to collaborate in the framework of the Collide residency award. Established in 2012, Collide is the international residency award that brings arts and science together in collaboration with leading cultural institutions in Europe.

Collide Copenhagen residency award is the new collaboration framework between CERN and CC that aims to support artistic research on art, science, and technology. Within this unique collaboration framework, Collide will be taking place annually over a three-year period (2023-2025).

For the first edition and the following annual calls, Arts at CERN and CC are inviting artists to reflect on the impact of science and research in contemporary culture. Proposals that consider the role of advanced technologies and novel scientific models as major topics in society are welcome. Collide is especially seeking artistic proposals that reflect on themes such as artificial intelligence, the modelling and analysis of vast datasets, the emergence of quantum technologies, and their interpretation from philosophical and ethical standpoints.

The artists selected for the 2023-2025 editions will be invited to take part in an ambitious exhibition at CC in 2025, investigating technology’s impact on humanity.

Artists from any country in the world are invited to submit an application proposing a project that combines research and production of a new work to develop during a two-month residency. The residency will be split in two periods, the first month at CERN (October 2023) and the second month in Copenhagen (November 2023). The scope of this proposal will include a research period in both locations, and a posterior development phase to define and produce a new artwork, with the curatorial support of both curatorial teams in Geneva and Copenhagen.

Collide offers the selected artist or artist collective the following financial support and conditions:

Living expenses for two months at CERN, Geneva, and Copenhagen.

Travel costs and accommodation within a fixed budget for the artistic residency period at CERN and Copenhagen.

A production stipend of CHF 15,000.

In case of an artist collective, all these costs will be split between the members. A maximum of 2 members of a collective can be hosted at the same time as residents.

Deadline: 8 May 2023

More info and apply: https://copenhagencontemporary.org/en/event/collide-copenhagen-2023/

Music Cities Network: European Music Business Task Force

Promus, the Music Community of Aarhus (DK) and the Music Cities Network invite 12 European music business professionals to embark on a transnational European expedition from April 2023 until May 2024. On this journey, they will search for answers to the question: How can we boost the European music market?

As the industry continues to face multiple challenges, the programme aims to develop deeper insights, elevate leadership skills, and foster knowledge. Together, participants will develop tools and proposals to create a strong and sustainable transnational European music market. The second volume of the EMBTF will build on the already published findings from the first Task Force held in 2021/22.

EMBFT Vol. II offers one crucial aspect that most music professionals don’t have - time. The participants are given the space to get out of their daily work environment to think outside the box and to think big, which is needed to establish a more future-oriented and more healthy European Music Industry.

The Task Force will meet in person and online to engage with various current challenges and opportunities in the music industry. On the basis of this groundwork, they will then actively participate during the following music industry festivals as part of the learning process facilitated by the creative leadership experts KaosPilots (five nights at each event):

Workshop 1: SPOT Festival and the SPOT+ Festival conference in Aarhus, Denmark (5-6 May 2023).

Workshop 2: Reeperbahn Festival and the Reeperbahn Festival Conference in Hamburg, Germany (20-23 September 2023).

Workshop 3: Iceland Airwaves and the Airwaves Pro Conference in Reykjavik, Iceland (2-4 November 2023).

Workshop 4: Eurosonic Noorderslag (ESNS) and the ESNS Conference in Groningen, Netherlands (2024).

Workshop 5: Tallinn Music Week and Conference in Tallinn, Estonia (2024).

The programme covers travel and accommodation to the five industry festivals.

Deadline: 20 March 2023

More info and apply: https://www.musiccitiesnetwork.com/open-call

Open Call for Dance Artists for CROWD 2023

CROWD – international dance exchange is a collaborative network of dance organisations, together seeking to support dance makers who engage with communities as part of their practice.

Through hosting residencies and opening up space for discussion and knowledge development, the programme aims to support dance artists with an established practice in community engaged dance-making to build their professional network, exchange experience with others in the field and develop their practice.

The Goethe-Institut initiated the project in 2021 and in the first year, CROWD supported 6 dance artists through residencies hosted with partners across Finland, the Netherlands, North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) in Germany and the UK. The network has since grown to include more partners and artists and in 2022, CROWD supported 10 new artists through a programme of residencies across Finland, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK.

This year, ten selected dance artists will exchange and collaborate with the support of the network partner organisations. Working in pairs, selected dance makers will come together twice, each time for a two-week, focused residency in a new context. Alongside the residencies, between June and October 2023, the entire network will engage in digital, discursive sessions exploring community engagement in dance.

The programme is open to artists based in Denmark, England, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (DE), or Scotland. Dance artists with a demonstrable practice in community engagement are encouraged to apply. The CROWD network is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community and encourages applications from those from under-represented backgrounds. The network has bursaries and support in place to accommodate applicants with additional access needs or caring responsibilities.

There is a fee of €3200/£2800 per artist to include residencies (4 weeks), any preparation and the additional digital sessions across the year (approximately 5 sessions of 1-2 hours, TBC). Travel, accommodation and per diems (€50/£45 per night away) are covered in addition to fees.

Deadline: 20 March 2023

More info and apply: https://crowd.dance/open-call-2023/

In autumn 2023, the National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst, SMK) will open an exhibition by the acclaimed artist Jessie Kleemann (1959-) - the first solo exhibition by a Kalaaleq artist organised by the museum. The seminar ‘Sialussuartut / Like a Cloudburst’ honours Kleemann’s esteemed, four decade-long career and her efforts to expand the field of possibility for Kalaallit artists. Taking its point of departure in Kleemann’s experimental practice, the symposium aims to spark renewed dialogue about contemporary Greenlandic art, about the status of embodied action in art, and about the politics and aesthetics of decolonisation.

The seminar will feature two poster sessions for which SMK now seek proposals. With these sessions, they aim to engage younger researchers, artists, and art students in order to build bridges between senior and emerging researchers and to unfold the seminar theme in the fullest.

Proposals can address, but are not limited to, the following topics:

Jessie Kleemann’s art practice.

Indigenous feminism and body art.

Modern and contemporary Greenlandic art.

Greenlandic art exhibition and museum histories and/or practices.

Decolonisation in Greenland and the arctic.

Greenlandic and arctic collaborations and networks within the arts.

Proposals are welcome from younger scholars, artists, and art students. SMK can offer up to 4 travel grants of up to 15,000 DKK each (roughly 2000 EUR) to offset travel expenses related to your participation in the seminar.

Deadline: 1 March 2023

More info and apply: https://arthist.net/archive/38293
