BJCEM: ‘Beyond Boundaries’ Residency (Italy)

Beyond Boundaries is a 21-day intensive residency programme, running 10-31 January 2024, and supported by Municipality of Milan – Fabbrica del Vapore, Ministry of Culture of Montenegro, Clube Portugues de Artes e Ideias, Fluks – Centre for Young Art, UKNA – UK New Artists, Department of Modern and Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture of Cyprus and developed in collaboration with BJCEM – Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean.

Fabbrica del Vapore is an important Milanese hub of creativity and innovation. The residency will be organised in this direction, giving the venue a strong connotation of a welcome place, an incubator of new ideas where an exchange among the artists of the residency, the curator and the place will make it possible to carry on research, new artistic practices, and peer to peer learning.

Taking the cue from the research of A Natural Oasis? – the BJCEM two-year nomadic free school dedicated to the development of new curatorial research paths in the field of contemporary, visual, and performing arts – Beyond Boundaries aims to foster the artistic practices of those territories, which are commonly considered remote, marginal, small, insular or liminal.

The call is open to artists who work in visual arts, applied arts, new media, photography, and performance. To be eligible, candidates must be under 35 (born after 1987) and come from or be based in the following territories: Portugal, Norway, UK, Montenegro, Municipality of Milan, Cyprus.

Each selected artist will receive a participation fee of 300 Euro; a production fee of 350 Euro; and a total per diem of 300 Euro. The non-resident selected artists will be provided a round ticket from and to the city indicated in the application form, covered by the partner of reference, and the Municipality of Milan will guarantee them accommodation in the facilities of Fabbrica Del Vapore.

Deadline: 12 December 2023

More info and apply: https://www.bjcem.org/2023/11/22/open-call-beyond-boundaries/

Realities in Transition: Call for XR Artistic Projects (Belgium)

The iMAL space in Brussels is launching a second call for XR artistic projects in the context of the Realities in Transition project. The selected artist(s) will be offered a residency at iMAL in March/April 2024, under the mentorship of the immersive performance pioneers of CREW Brussels.

How we experience digital content is changing rapidly with the emergence of extended reality, or XR. XR brings together virtual, augmented and mixed reality to create a blended reality in which data seamlessly mingles with the physical environment.

The impact of this new integrated world is becoming evident across society in domains such as education, healthcare, industry and culture. Inevitably, the opportunities XR presents also introduce critical issues relating to sustainability, ethics, data privacy, and unequal access to technology, to name a few examples.

XR tools offer creatives and artists compelling possibilities for building upon and challenging existing modes of content creation and storytelling while helping to develop original methodologies for producing new artistic media.

During the residency at iMAL, Brussels, from 4 March - 28 April 2024, the selected applicant(s) will receive access to its XR LAB, which contains state-of-the-art equipment for creating and producing XR projects, as well as curatorial and production support. The selected resident(s) will also be provided with guidance and special mentorship by CREW and have the opportunity to work with different motion capture systems, a variety of VR HMDs (stand-alone and PC-based), trackers, video projectors, 3D scanners, as well as full pipelines of audio and video equipment, adapted to the needs of XR. The entire process will be supported by an array of high end gaming computers and network equipment.

Towards the end of the residency, a public event will be held at which the resident(s) will present the resulting work.

A budget of €9350 will be provided to cover fee (€2000); development and production (€3000); accommodation and subsistence (€3750); and travel (€600).

The call is open to all emerging creatives who are European residents.

Deadline: 3 December 2023

More info and apply: https://www.imal.org/en/news/rit-call-2023

In 2024, three small islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Ustica in Italy, Alonissos in Greece and Gozo in Malta, will host a 7-day residency programme where artists will be inspired by the beautiful natural environments, the ancient maritime traditions, and the direct relationships with local communities to create their born-digital and physical artworks. Artists will be encouraged to design artworks to be integrated into the marine, natural and architectural landscapes of the islands, thus creating an open-air and underwater museum making the three Islands a guiding light for Ocean Conservation.

The residency programme will foster a cooperation process between artists and communities to raise ocean literacy and inspire a more environmentally friendly behaviour, with co-creation and cross fertilisation activities on-site and online. Artworks (both digital and physical ones) will become the tangible results of the two-year residency programme that includes for each island:

4 Digital artists.

3 Street/Urban/Guerrilla/Ecological/Graffiti/Land artists.

1 Artist producing underwater artworks/sculptures.

Overall, the programme will involve 8 Artists for each island and 24 artists in total willing to:

Be engaged in co-creating projects to spread people’s awareness of marine preservation.

Improve their skills using digital technologies and digital media in the creative process.

Be trained on innovative and sustainable methods applied to creative processes.

The project covers round trips from European cities, boards and lodging costs for the in-person activities. It also provides some support for production costs, and stipends varying from 2000 – 3500 EUR.

Applicants must be based in a European country.

Deadline: 10 November 2023

More info and apply: https://art4sea.eu/call-for-artists/

BEK - Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts: Replicator Workshop (Norway)

BEK - Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts has one spot left for an artist, researcher or maker to participate in the ‘Replicator Workshop: A practical speculation on generative AI for physical production’. The workshop is led by visual artist Magnhild Øen Nordahl and researcher Gabriele de Seta, combining their interests in abstraction and machine learning. It will run for three days (6-8 November 2023) in Bergen and result in a presentation during the symposium The Only Lasting Truth is Change on 18 November 2023.

The term ‘generative artificial intelligence’ describes a subset of machine learning systems used to synthesise various kinds of content including text, images, videos, sounds, and 3D models. In contrast to discriminative models which classify existing data, generative machine learning models are capable of synthesising new instances of data according to what they learned from training datasets.

Generative AI has a growing range of applications, which run the gamut from scientific discovery and VFX work to industrial manufacturing and graphic design. Its use across domains results in the development of new creative practices and literacies like prompt engineering and model fine-tuning. The more consumer-oriented side of generative AI is often marketed through appeals to unlimited creativity and the almost magical capability to transform text into images or images into videos.

But what are the limits of generative AI? How does the seemingly endless variation in digital outputs interface with physical production processes? How close is generative AI to the science fictional fabrication afforded by the Star Trek replicator, and what can we speculate about the near future of generative AI for physical production through currently available tools?

In the workshop we will explore available models and tools, such as text and image to 3D-model converters, and develop an experimental pipeline from generative AI to physical production. Through the task of creating one physical object together the workshop participants will use this practical work as a way to discuss the above mentioned questions and to ask new ones.

The workshop participants will be present in person for the three full days of the workshop in Bergen. No previous skills are required, but an interest in working hands on with the above mentioned tools and topics is a must.

BEK will cover travel up to NOK 2500 (~215 EUR), accommodation and a fee of NOK 5000 for participation.

Deadline: 20 October 2023

More info and apply: https://bek.no/en/replicator-workshop-2/

SHARESPACE: Call for Media Artists to Make a Work for the Deep Space 8K (Austria)

In the near future, more and more communication will occur in digital spaces. This leads to a further blurring of the border between humans and technology, and an increase of their close intertwining in everyday life. Therefore, steering this hybrid future towards the creation of new opportunities for human-centric, safe, rewarding, and inclusive social interaction is vital.

SHARESPACE is a Horizon Europe research and innovation project that aims to create future Social Hybrid Spaces (SHS). In these SHS, humans and avatars engage in embodied collaborative tasks. Social sensorimotor primitives, which refers to how people interact and communicate with each other through their senses and movements, are transparently captured through mobile connected innovative sensors, and then reconstructed using novel extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence (AI) technology, ultimately improving embodied collaboration in digital spaces. SHARESPACE involves a wide range of European universities, companies and institutions from various fields.

SHARESPACE is now looking for a media artist (group) to collaborate with. The goal of the collaboration is for the artist to realise their own art work for the Deep Space 8K, located at the Ars Electronica Center, utilising SHARESPACE technology. This space enables immersive XR environments through 3D stereoscopic floor and wall projections (16m x 9m). Artists are invited to create a multi-user, hybrid, interactive art performance that leverages embodied interaction between people and different types of Virtual Humans. The developed artwork will be shown in Deep Space 8K at the Ars Electronica Festival 2024.

Following a kick-off meeting in Linz in February 2024, technical production will take place from April – September 2024.

For the development of the artwork, the artist will receive 15,000 EUR. This budget should cover all costs including travel to Linz, material costs, working hours, and potential subcontracts.

Deadline: 19 November 2023

More info and apply: https://sharespace.eu/open-call-for-artists/

FREEYOU Next: Fellowship for Digital Artists (Spain, Belgium, Italy / Online)

FREEYOU Next, builds on FREEYOU – a project funded by the Media Literacy for Al Programme, and its main product: a blended multilingual educational format (and resources) for media and data literacy, targeted to teachers, educators, and facilitators that work with youngsters. FREEYOU Next is a European flagship initiative created by five European institutions: MEET Digital Center, GLUON, INOVA+, Dataninja, and FZC-Etopia.

The main goal of FREEYOU Next is to make young people active thinkers and creative agents instead of passive users of social media. To do so, we FREEYOU Next aims to bring digital artists into the media and data literacy speculation to work on inspiring tools to change behaviours, boost co-creation processes between them and young people, and to promote cross-pollination dynamics between artists/activists/journalists/teachers to improve a collective awareness by influencing each other.

To this end, FREEYOU Next is launching this international call for participants to select 3 digital creatives, to join a 6-month fellowship programme (between November 2023 and May 2024) consisting of a blended approach with online meetings, mentorship, and a physical residency of at least two weeks.

Digital media and social media are reshaping how new generations interact with each other and the world. Very quickly they are also conditioning their self-esteem, creating unreachable expectations of how they look or how many material goods they need. All this is modifying their relationship with the environment, the economy, or politics. They get information and validate opinions on the realm of the algorithm; while doing so, they provide and consume data. The selected projects will address this relationship of usage and misuse to offer a new approach to media literacy by including work with teenagers in their creative process.

During the 6-month program, selected fellows work on their proposed projects, and present them to the public at the end of the trajectory in a transnational exhibition (Spain, Belgium, and Italy) and a final one in Meet, Milan (Nov/Dec 2024). The fellowship programme focuses on the creative usages of data but does not exclude other forms of digital art. The selected fellows will receive a grant of €20,000. The residencies will take place in Zaragoza Spain at FZC_ETOPIA, Meet, and Gluon.

Nieuwe Instituut: Call for Fellows 2023, ‘Tool Sheds’ (Netherlands)

Using Tool Sheds as a point of departure, this year Nieuwe Instituut’s Call for Fellows invites applicants to conceptualise, design and test applied research tools, instruments, methods, formats and processes for generative world-building using material, theoretical, political, time-based or place-based sets of practices.

By calling for different forms of research, they invite applicants to embrace embodied forms of knowing, learning and investigating, and to think more deeply about the relationship between theory and practice. Nieuwe Instituut and its Research collective are currently engaged in imagining how museums and cultural institutions could function as ‘testing grounds’: equitable sites for action-based forms of research with the aim of enacting a society that supports all life, while at the same time investigating how to approach and situate ‘research as testing’ within the role of a cultural institution.

The Tool Shed is one of the Research team’s concepts for public interfacing, through which research can engage and interact with various publics. Nieuwe Instituut offer their own tools, while also leaving the metaphorical doors of the Tool Shed open for others to contribute and share their own.

Applicants are encouraged to submit a proposal that addresses their current investigations, explorations, or unfinished thoughts through the lens of architecture, design and digital culture. Proposals should clearly state their focus and aims, and also the socio-economic, nature-cultural and political context in which they are based. They may incorporate a larger system of reference, schools of critical thought and transdisciplinary practices, and non-academic references, as well as different forms of engagement and co-creation.

Nieuwe Instituut offers two Research Fellowship positions for six months (from January 2024 to June 2024). Each of these positions includes a maximum budget of 20,000 euros. Stipends may be subject to a withholding tax.

There is no age limit for applicants. Individuals and collectives from all places of residence are invited to apply.

Deadline: 10 September 2023

More info and apply: https://nieuweinstituut.nl/en/articles/call-for-fellows-tool-sheds

Recent practices at the intersection of arts and technology have started to explore the boundaries and the intersections between the two, and to find new ways to speak about the artistic work produced.

In this spirit, the aim of the ‘Boundary-Crosser’ residency project is to provide an opportunity for artists to explore creative intersections and processes with technologists. In practice what this means is that artists will be hosted by one of the 8 participating CYENS Centre of Excellence Labs and will generate artistic work, during and after their time of residency.

At the heart of Nicosia’s historic centre, the CYENS Centre of Excellence is a new and vibrant entity, connecting academic research with cutting-edge tech developments. The insertion of artists, through processes of Creative Placemaking, into the work of CYENS’ research groups aims to open new possibilities for creativity, engagement and dialogue.

Residencies run 2-4 months. Applications are open to Cyprus-based or international fine and digital artists, designers, performers (actors, dancers, performance artists), and musicians.

Residents are granted a stipend of 1250 EUR per month.

Deadline: 30 July 2023

More info and apply: https://museumlab.cyens.org.cy/project/the-cyens-centre-of-excellence-residency-a-creative-placemaking-project/

ShUM: Artist in Residence (Germany)

In the Middle Ages, the Jewish communities in Speyer, Worms and Mainz formed a centre of Jewish life (collectively covered here by the acronym ShUM formed from the first letters of the cities’ Hebrew names) and was unique for the whole of Ashkenaz – as Middle and Western Europe was known in Rabbinic literature. These towns formed a unique association that deeply influenced the architecture, culture, religion and jurisdiction of the central and east European Jewish diaspora, an impact still evident today. Monuments, synagogues, women’s shuln, teaching houses, ritual baths and the old Jewish cemeteries in Worms and Mainz together with the religious tradition bear testimony to the immense importance and innovative power of the ShUM communities.

In July 2021, the ShUM cities were recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the first Jewish World Heritage recognition in Germany. They are now offering up to three project fellowships for the realisation of an artistic project that addresses the history of the ShUM communities and their religious, cultural, and architectural legacy.

Proposals should take an artistic approach to the ShUM legacy, taking into consideration Judaism’s ideas, history and current position. During their stay, the artistic ShUM fellows will also be expected to allow interested visitors an insight into their work and concepts in a suitable form, e.g., in workshop discussions. Young people and schools will also be invited, and an exchange of ideas with local artists and cultural institutions is desirable.

The call is open to artists from around the world working in visual and media art, architecture and design, music, or literature.

Residency conditions

The residency will last for 4 to 6 weeks and is scheduled between mid-August and the end of September 2024. Fellows will work and live in one of the three ShUM cities (Worms, Speyer or Mainz).

Fellows are offered a rent-free, furnished apartment, a studio/work room, travel expenses up to €1000, an allowance of €250 per residency week, and a contribution to other expenses (materials or services) of up to €1000.

In addition, the curator and artistic director as well as the respective cultural departments of the three towns will offer help and advice in realising the project/s by arranging contact to local artists and cultural institutions as well as with government offices, companies and organisations.

Deadline: 30 September 2023

More info and apply: https://www.speyer.de/en/culture/shum-a-unesco-world-heritage-site/shum-artist-in-residence/

The project MODINA (Movement, Digital Intelligence and Interactive Audience) aims to expand the creative possibilities for contemporary dance performances, and augment the experience for the audience, using digital technology – with an emphasis on exploring artificial intelligence (AI) and audience interaction, on-site and online. MODINA is a 3-year Creative Europe cooperation project, co-financed by the European Union.

Within the intersection between contemporary dance and technology, increasing attention is being given to AI (computers as creative partners) and to audience interaction (a shift from passive spectators to active participants). This creates interesting challenges for dance artists and creative technologists: how to integrate computational systems and audience members in a performance as co-creators, in a way that enhances the artistic work?

In the scope of MODINA, the partners are opening a call for artist residencies for multidisciplinary duos, encompassing competences in dance and in technology (particularly related to computational creativity and audience interaction), for example: a dancer/choreographer and a creative technologist. In the first stage of MODINA, 5 residencies of 8 weeks will be organised across 5 performance centres: CNDB (Romania), Kino Siska (Slovenia), STL (Estonia), tanzhaus nrw (Germany), and Trafo (Hungary). These residencies will receive mentorship from academic partners, from 3 universities: Hochschule Düsseldorf, Tallinn University and University of Lisbon.

The five 8-week residencies will take place between November 2023 and April 2024.

The programme offers:

Travel/Accommodation.

A budget composed of (gross amounts):

Artist fee of €5000 for the 8 weeks per each of the 2 artists.

Production budget of up to €3000, which can also be used for hire(s), e.g. an additional dancer or an additional programmer, musician, video artist etc, for example during the 4 weeks in the studio.

Additional production needs might also be covered, in agreement with the host institution.

Access to equipment of the host institution.

Assistance of (at least) one stage technician, available throughout the full 4 weeks of studio time.

Mentoring from a MODINA academic partner throughout the residency (including a 3-day co-located workshop).

Promotion.

Documentation (photos, videos, etc).

Invitation to pre/post events:

Invitation to kick-off event in Tallinn, 20-21 September 2023, with all 10 selected artists for the 5 residencies and representatives of all MODINA partner institutions (travel, accommodation, and daily fee paid).

Invitation to final event for MODINA in Düsseldorf, in early 2026 (travel, accommodation, and daily fee paid).

Showcasing the outcome of the residency in approximately 3 more countries within the MODINA network, in the second half of 2024. This is as a follow-up, outside of the scope of the residency; an additional budget will be proposed for it.

Deadline: 24 May 2023

More info and apply: https://modina.eu/calls/residencies23-24/
