PRAKSIS Residency, ‘Bricking It: An Urgent Situation 2024’ (Indonesia)

Traditional Indonesian brick is unfired and requires no mortar: water and friction alone fuse the bricks together, creating structures that demonstrate remarkable flexibility and resilience. Because of this, many of Indonesia’s historic brick structures – the Wringin Lawang gate, the Pari Temple, and others – have withstood earthquakes for more than six centuries. In contrast, newer Indonesian buildings made from modern, Western-style brick and mortar have proved catastrophically less resistant to seismic disturbance.

PRAKSIS Residency 26, Bricking It: An Urgent Situation 2024 will draw on Indonesian vernacular knowledge to explore the technology, history, aesthetics and potentials of traditional brick as a sustainable medium. It will take place from 1-30 April 2024 at Samong Haven, a culture and learning centre under development in Sumberkima, north-west Bali. Residency participants will spend a month developing hands-on skills, building background knowledge and testing new concepts using traditional Indonesian brick, and applications are welcomed from any maker or researcher with related art, design, craft or industry knowledge and experience. Specialist input into the residency comes from Indonesian architect Andy Rahman and senior researchers Professor Totok Noerwasito and Dr. I Nyoman Gede Maha Putra, who will make visits to conduct soil testing, lead brickmaking workshops and supervise an actual, small-scale, construction project.

Co-ordinating the residency are An Urgent Situation project initiators PRAKSIS and Oslo-based architect Don Lawrence. This is the fourth episode within the overarching An Urgent Situation residency series, a long-term PRAKSIS project focusing on learning from local Indonesian vernacular technology, design, society and culture to address the impact of tourism on people and the environment.

In addition to a facilitated programme, residents will receive:

Accommodation - this may involve sharing a twin room with one other person.

Three meals a day provided on site - residents can choose to eat elsewhere at their own cost.

A stipend of 5000 NOK (~425 EUR) towards travel and other costs.

Travel from and to the airport to Sumberkima by group shuttle bus.

Deadline: 4 January 2024

More info and apply: https://www.praksisoslo.org/residencieslist/r26-bricking-it

A particular focus of the TORIGOYA Project is to increase the number of people visiting and living in Hirono Town.

The artist-in-residence programme will be based on the theme of the ‘TORIGOYA (rooster hut)’, a traditional local new year event, to add new value to the ‘TORIGOYA’ through contemporary art, thereby communicating Hirono Town’s attractions to the world.

Invited artists will stay in Hirono Town for a total of 30 days between 11 December 2023 – 15 January 2024 to research the history, climate, culture or some other factor of Hirono Town and create their own site-specific artworks in collaboration with town residents, especially youth and children as socially engaged art. Artists should also create an artwork about the process of building his/her/their site-specific artwork in some form of media till the end of February. There are no restrictions on the media. It can be a photograph or video, painting, 3D works, media art, literary work such as poem, novel or play, or musical work.

Site-specific works created during the residency will be burned (or dismantled if they cannot be burned) in the same manner as traditional TORIGOYA during the ‘Dondoyaki’ on 8 January.

100,000 yen (~635 EUR) will be provided as a provisional payment upon arrival in Hirono for various activities during the stay. The committee will cover the actual cost of materials, tools and for production up to 100,000 yen (~635 EUR). The cost of transportation from the artist’s current address to Hirono Town will be paid up to 100,000 yen (~635 EUR). Two round trips within this amount are acceptable. Accommodation is provided.

Deadline: 30 October 2023

More info and apply: https://hironotorigoya.com

The Gwangju Media Art Platform (G.MAP) and Seoul Metropolitan Government are collaboratively organising an international open call for media facade artworks to be simultaneously exhibited in two cities – Gwangju and Seoul. This initiative seeks to foster creative exchange within UNESCO Creative Cities and to discover and support interdisciplinary media art creators.

Four projects will be selected through the open call for exhibition from 24 November 2023 – 31 March 2024. Each individual (or team) will receive 20 million KRW (~14,000 EUR) including tax and transportation expenses for the production of their artwork and for travel costs related to supplementary events hosted by Seoul Special City and G.MAP related to the contest and exhibition.

ICA Yerevan: ‘Earth and Song’ Residency for Ceramic Artists (Armenia)

‘Earth and Song’ is a community development project implemented by the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA Yerevan) in Vardablur village (Lori province, Armenia). The project aims to revitalise community life through artistic activities rooted in the cultural tradition of the village: the craft of pottery, and the musical heritage of Komitas. The project was piloted in 2021 with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office International Relief Fund. As a result, twelve young villagers were trained by prominent ceramicists and made in situ artistic interventions, like installing ceramic mailboxes and replacing missing roof tiles with decorative tiles they created. A community choir performing Komitas’ heritage was also formed and trained by an invited conductor. To foster this process of transformation through art, ICA is implementing a fully funded art residency programme in Vardablur for ceramic artists to create, learn, research, and share experiences within this authentic creative hub.

The residency will consist of two months of intensive artistic exchange: 1-2 weeks in Yerevan, comprising an orientation meeting and an introduction to the Armenian art scene, followed by 6-7 weeks of creative work in a fully equipped ceramic studio in Vardablur. A final project will be implemented in the Vardablur community, and possibly at ICA’s premises in Yerevan. ICA provides a flexible framework and mentorship, while not limiting the artistic process. An essential part of the art residency is the cooperation with the local pottery artists and students for workshops (at least 2), and implementation of small-scale joint projects (at least 1), such as public art installations or exhibitions.

Applicants are required to have relevant training and experience in the field of pottery/ceramics, as well as experience of working in community art projects. Applicants must also be legally residing in one of the 40 Creative Europe countries, except Armenia.

The organisers provide a travel allowance of €350 or €700 (depending on the distance), a daily stipend of 25€, and accommodation, as well as studio facilities.

Deadline: 1 October 2023

More info and apply: https://ica.am/en/Open-Call-Earth-and-Song

Tuwaiq Sculpture is part of Riyadh Art – the first national public art initiative in Saudi Arabia and one of the largest public art projects undertaken in the world today.

Akin to a contemporary tribute to Futurism, ‘Dimensions of Movement’ aims to capture the vitality of the ongoing transformation in the Middle East and the drive towards innovation and new horizons. It beckons artists to propose awe-inspiring sculptures that transcend boundaries, expand perceptions of space and time, and convey a sense of speed, power, and progress.

The Symposium will run 14 January - 10 February 2024, with 30 participants. The organisers provide: artist fee (37,500 SAR which is approx. 10,000 EUR), return flight tickets, transportation, hotel accommodation with full board, a programme of cultural activities, and professional assistants to support the participating artists.

Mekong Cultural Hub: Call for Local Gathering Hosts in Asia (Online / Remote, Vietnam)

Every 18 months, Mekong Cultural Hub organises Meeting Point, a regional gathering for people interested in art and social action in Asia.

MCH is currently seeking people to host Local Gatherings as part of the 2024 Meeting Point. The aims of this programme are to expand the community of people engaged with the Meeting Point platform, and to give practitioners micro-grants to organise events in their local communities.

A Local Gathering can be an activity such as a talk, workshop, seminar or creative action which engages people in connection and exchange in relation to the theme of the 2024 Meeting Point, ‘Perspectives from the Grassroots’. It can be a short event (e.g. half a day) or happen over 2-3 days. It can be for a big group or a small group, depending on the topics you want to engage on and the format of your gathering.

By creating a network of multiple local gatherings happening in parallel, MCH aims to generate collective energy to feed into the Meeting Point and to create a sense of connection and solidarity between communities.

After organising their local event (anytime between 8-16 March 2023), hosts will take part in an in-person programme in Hanoi from 21-23 March 2024. There will also be exchange workshops for local gathering hosts (2 hours per month online between November 2023 and February 2024, and 1 full day in-person in Hanoi on 20 March 2024).

MCH offers a grant of between $500-1500 USD to organise your gathering, and will cover all costs for one representative per Gathering to attend the Meeting Point in Hanoi.

Deadline: 10 September 2023

More info and apply: https://www.mekongculturalhub.org/news/2023/07/local-gatherings-2024/

Mekong Cultural Hub (MCH) is a non-profit organisation, whose mission is to empower diverse cultural practitioners to bring to life their visions for a sustainable and inclusive Asia. They initiate projects and work on collaborations all around Asia, particularly focusing on Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Since 2018, they have connected more than 200 artists and other cultural workers from the region for professional exchange, co-creation and collaboration.

MCH is now recruiting a new position of Program Manager, responsible for leading programs and projects related to Networks & Alliances. The Program Manager will work alongside existing Program Manager, Jennifer Lee, who leads on programs and projects related to Fellowships & Training, and Frances Rudgard, Director of MCH.

MCH are creating this new role because a core aspect of MCH’s strategic plan for 2023-2027 is to further develop the MCH network, by expanding its ‘hub and spoke’ model. They are doing this by establishing at least one formal ‘hub partnership’ in each of their six focus countries. The hub partners are local organisations or networks who can work, with MCH and with each other, to share, deliver and create opportunities for cultural practitioners looking to connect and collaborate across Asia, and in doing so build a regional community of practitioners working across art, culture and society.

In the short to medium term, MCH is providing structure, resources and facilitation to support the hubs network to develop. The Program Manager, Network & Alliances will be the lead MCH staff member growing and coordinating this network.

The position is open to candidates from and based in South-East Asia and Taiwan. If the selected candidate is based in either Phnom Penh or Taipei they may work at a Living Arts International office. Otherwise, they will work remotely, with approximately 1-2 trips within South-East Asia and Taiwan per year.

Starting salary is 1800 USD per month, based on LAI’s salary scale indexed to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The salary may be negotiated based on location of the selected candidate.

Deadline: 27 August 2023

More info and apply: https://www.mekongculturalhub.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Job-Vacancy-at-MCH-Program-Manager_Networks-Alliances-2023.pdf

Kulturschafft e.V., CSN Lab, and Untitled Tbilisi are launching an open call for participation in an online mentoring programme from September to October 2023, followed by a programme of visit(s) and an exhibition in Yerevan from 6-12 November 2023.

The project is aimed at artists, curators, cultural managers, art educators, and other cultural practitioners who want to broaden their practices by using digital tools and new media to address the current social and political issues. The call is for professionals from Armenia, Georgia, and those who migrated to Germany, Armenia, and Georgia due to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine and political repressions in Belarus.

The programme offers lectures, presentations and discussions on digital technologies and trends, such as AI, VR, Metaverse and Blockchain, and their use and impact on art and culture. Special attention will be given to socially oriented and activist media art, as well as to the strategies of formation of self-organised initiatives, based on the principles of decolonisation, social inclusion, solidarity, and active interaction with the local context and community.

The online programme (September – October) will be dedicated to digital art production, as well as its representation and promotion in virtual platforms and digital spaces. With the support of qualified mentors, participants will develop their own digital project prototypes and will be offered the opportunity to present them at the exhibition in Yerevan (10-12 November 2023). They will also be introduced to funding instruments in the aforementioned countries, which may help them further develop their projects.

During the program of visits in Yerevan (6-12 November 2023), participants will explore the local cultural scene, its transformation and challenges caused by recent events in Armenia and Georgia, including political, economic crises and neocolonial practices resulting from high migration flow. Exchange and group work, on cultural and social practices of decolonising, will play a core role in the programme. The experiences of the project will be documented in the form of a zine, which will include essays, interviews, mind maps, and other materials produced during the project.

Travel expenses (transportation, accommodation, and meals) will be covered and arranged by the project organisers.

The working language of the workshops and the conference is English. The expected level of English for participants is upper intermediate (B2).

Deadline: 20 August 2023

More info and apply: https://cultureunderpressure.art/opencall

Application are now being accepted for Al Madinah art symposium ‘Madan’, which will be held in Madinah, from 3-10 August 2023, organised by the Madina Art Center.

The open call’s objectives are to bring together over 30 artists in one location and to encourage artists’ creative experiences by showcasing works in a variety of mediums. Applications are welcome from artists who specialise in photography and multimedia, Arabic calligraphy, Islamic motifs, plastic arts, and contemporary art.

The first iteration of the symposium is called ‘Madan’, which is an Arabic word that means ‘citify’, to acknowledge the significance of urbanisation and civilisation in the history of humanity as well as the influence of cities on our contemporary cultures and societies. It also emphasises the notion that culture, such as in cities, is a dynamic process that is constantly changing and evolving rather than a static entity.

The symposium’s schedule is extensive and features workshops, talks, panel discussions, tours, and cultural activities. An exhibition of the works produced concludes it. The activities continue throughout the public portion of the symposium.

The Madina Art Center provides accommodations, meals, transportation, as well as the necessary tools and workspace for art creation at the symposium. Those without the means to cover travel can ask the Center to cover all or a portion of the cost.

Deadline: 20 July 2023

More info and apply: https://www.madan-art.com

Geumgang Nature Art Biennale: Open Call, 'Shelter in the Forest' (South Korea)

The 11th Geumgang Nature Art Biennale will be a venue for exchange among nature artists around the world, introducing new encounters with nature alongside art.

The 2023-2024 Geumgang Nature Art Biennale aims to create a new discourse on ‘Nature Art’, and calls for artworks under the theme of ‘Shelter in the Forest II’.

The ‘Shelter in the Forest’ exhibition is a project in which nature artists create shelters on the forest of Yeonmisan Mountain. The first shelter project was held in 2018 and exhibited shelter works by 25 artists/teams from 16 countries. Some works are still available through the permanent exhibition at Yeonmisan Nature Art Park. Today, as attention of people around the world is focused on global change and environmental pollution continues to rise, discussions on nature and ecology have become more important. The Korean Nature Artist’s Association-YATOO, which has been pursuing the aesthetics of coexistence between nature and humans since its founding in 1981, wants to present the 2024 Geumgang Nature Art Biennale - ‘Shelter in the Forest II’ exhibition to present nature art in a broader range and explore the relationship among ‘Nature-Art-Human’. This exhibition, realised by the artistic imagination of nature artists, will serve as an artistic shelter that protects against the tempestuous rain and wind of the reality of today.

Artists are invited to submit model drawings for an exhibition from 26 August – 15 October 2023. A number of projects will then be selected for production at the 2024 Geumgang Nature Art Biennale.

The final selected artists will receive an artist fee of 3 million KRW (~2100 EUR), and a roundtrip ticket to the Biennale, with food and accommodation covered.

Deadline: 31 July 2023

More info and apply: http://www.natureartbiennale.org/home/bbs/board.php?bo_table=notice&wr_id=188

Tokyo Festival Farm Asian Performing Arts Camp is a programme for performing arts practitioners working in various parts of Asia. Using their own personal themes and concerns as starting points, the participants conduct research and fieldwork, hold discussions with people from different countries and cultures, and participate in lectures and workshops. Through this process, the Camp aims to help artists cultivate thoughts and ideas together, and to explore future possibilities for their own practices and fields.

The 2023 edition of the Camp will adopt a hybrid format, combining online activities with a stay in Tokyo lasting around one week. The final day will feature a presentation session that is open to the public, where participants can share what they have gained and exchange thoughts with the audience and guests, thus fostering their own artistic growth.

Activities run from 21 July – 17 October 2023. If you are a creative based in Asia (aged 35 or younger) who plays an integral role in performing arts productions, whether as director, choreographer, playwright, dramaturg, producer or other, you are encouraged you to apply for this programme.

Among other forms of support, for the stay in Tokyo the programme provides a per diem, accommodation, and round-trip flight tickets.
