Robert Rauschenberg Foundation: Archives Research Residency (USA)

The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Archives Research Residency is an opportunity for researchers and scholars interested in visiting the Rauschenberg Foundation and its Archives in New York City. The eligible travel period for this round runs 4 April - 13 December 2024.

The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Archives, consisting of Robert Rauschenberg’s personal papers and the records from his Florida and New York studios, is the most comprehensive body of information on the artist’s life and career. The Archives Research Residency supports continued scholarly and investigative use of these materials by supporting individuals that demonstrate a compelling need to use the archives and addressing financial barriers that may prohibit onsite access to the archives. In addition, the application is open to all individuals, thereby encouraging research opportunities that move beyond traditional art historical discourse.

Projects can range from traditional to innovative:

Exhibitions and publications.

Globalism and internationalism.

Inspiration for personal art practice.

Artistic collaboration and multi-disciplinary practices.

Underrepresented topics and audiences.

The Archives Research Residency will provide partial support for research costs ranging from $4,000 - $7,000 depending on travel distance and residency length. Residents should plan to spend four days to three weeks onsite and costs must be related to the time spent at the foundation. Funds are provided as a stipend and a budget is not required.

Stipend Amounts:

NYC and vicinity (within 150 miles): $4000.

North America, including Canada and Mexico, and Western Europe: $5000.

Other International: $6000.

Supplement:

Up to two weeks: n/a.

Third week: additional $1000.

As the residency does not include housing, stipends are typically used to cover accommodations as well as airfare, local transit, and other travel-related overhead.

Deadline: 10 November 2023

More info and apply: https://www.rauschenbergfoundation.org/archives-research-residency

MSUFCU Arts Power Up Arts Residency Program at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), the CoLab Studio within the Michigan State University Museum, and the innovative STEAMpower Project are proud to collaborate within the MSUFCU Arts Power Up Arts Residency Program. The program is designed to promote collaboration, exploration, experimentation, and innovation within a supportive environment for the creation of new artworks at the intersection of art, science, and technology.

Located on the campus of Michigan State University, FRIB is a world-unique rare isotope research facility, enabling new science opportunities at the frontiers of nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental symmetries, and societal applications. FRIB supports a community of approximately 1800 scientists from around the world. The laboratory has a strong program for public engagement, and regularly collaborates with artists of various disciplines.

The MSU Museum is an innovative museum committed to promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, research, and education in the arts and sciences. The MSU Museum serves the Michigan State University community by facilitating and creating experiences at the nexus of the arts, sciences, cultures, and technologies. The CoLab Studio, a division for innovation and experimentation at the MSU Museum, develops methods for designing and implementing novel, transient and experimental programming, informal learning and community engagement.

MSUFCU Arts Power Up Arts Residency at the STEAMpower Project is designed to spark new research and modes of cross-disciplinary learning by bringing artists, researchers and graduate student collaborators together to address global challenges. Within this unique framework, a call for an artist in residency at FRIB will take place annually over the next 5 years. The CoLab Studio at the MSU Museum will exhibit new artworks created as a result of the residencies.

For the first edition of this call, the organisers invite visual artists from any background or medium to apply for this residency program during which they will immerse themselves in the FRIB laboratory’s environment, and interact with its scientists, students, and staff, as well as engage with the dynamic and vibrant arts communities at CoLab and STEAMpower. The residency program fosters a culture of experimentation, innovation, and pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic practices, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary exchange and exploration.

The theme for this first call is nuclear astrophysics, one of the major research directions at FRIB, which aims to understand how the properties of atomic nuclei shape the nature of stars, supernova explosions, and the chemical elements that make up the universe and ultimately enable the formation of planets and life. Artists with a keen interest in science, technology, interdisciplinary practices, experimentation, innovation, and engaging with diverse communities are encouraged to apply. This call is especially reaching for artistic proposals of interactive visual artworks that explore the broader societal or philosophical context of FRIB’s nuclear astrophysics research.

The selected artist-in-residence will spend at least three, and up to four months on the campus of Michigan State University, located in East Lansing, Michigan.

The program offers the selected artist the following financial support and conditions:

Travel expenses to/from their current location to East Lansing, Michigan.

Accommodation within a fixed budget for up to 4 months in East Lansing, Michigan.

Total stipend of $20,000 USD (before taxes).

Production costs of up to $15,000 for the new work of art.

Facilitate interactions with other artists in residence at MSU, and in networking with other artists in Michigan

Additional support for child care might be available within a fixed budget of $1000 USD per month.

Deadline: 20 October 2023

More info and apply: https://msumuseum.submittable.com/submit/261533/msufcu-arts-power-up-arts-residency-program-at-the-facility-for-rare-isotope-beam

Soft Data and Common Wares Artist Residency (USA)

‘Soft Data and Common Wares’ is an ongoing interdisciplinary collaboration between the DXARTS Softlab (e-textiles and wearable technology lab run by Afroditi Psarra in DXARTS) and Studio Tilt (interaction design research studio run by Audrey Desjardins in Design). The collaboration probes the connections between working with data-driven approaches and crafting physical artefacts, and examines the intimate spaces of the home and the body, and the assistive and affective technologies they engage with. Both labs are interested in the process of collecting, archiving, and critically transcoding data from the intimate spaces of the home and the body, and the search for meaningful interpretations; they use material experimentations and prototyping as techniques to shape social identities and create intellectual and cultural commons.

With this call artists are invited to join the project in conversations on diverse topics such as: the non-neutrality of data, algorithmic bias, digital labour, the invisible infrastructures of data collection, gender and the body, networks, methods, sonic technologies, interpretative nature of data, and earth + space + body. The goal is to create connections (between people, projects, and spaces) and build a vocabulary of commons. The organisers envision projects that explore the creation of artefacts, materials and processes of any medium (multidisciplinary practices encouraged).

The residency is hosted in an academic setting (at University of Washington, Seattle, USA) so there is a possibility to work with students in art and design. The last week will involve public sharing of the project (including a talk). An exhibition of the work is also planned (e.g. in a gallery setting or installation) beyond the timeframe of the exhibition.

The project offers:

$3000 honorarium.

Travel funding (up to $650).

Accommodation (up to $2000).

Shared studio space and access to fabrication equipment.

A small budget for materials.

Exhibition space.

Soft Data and Common Wares will host two residencies (each one-month long). Residencies will take place in spring 2024 (within the period from 1 April – 30 June 2024).

Deadline: 1 October 2023

More info and apply: https://www.newmediacaucus.org/soft-data-and-common-wares-call-for-artist-residency-2023-2024/

Eyebeam: Democracy Machine Fellowship Open Call (Online / USA)

We are amid a global tech emergency; the act of discovery and creation by artists is more necessary than ever. In this digital-first fellowship cycle, running 15 February – 15 August 2024, Eyebeam call on artists to bring their innate mental, spiritual, and physical aspects of what it means to be human into play with technology to affirm humanity’s role as creators, not spectators, of our collective techno-future.

Technology has transformed how we live, work, and communicate. Still, it has also brought new challenges related to its impact on society, forcing the world to reconsider the meaning of previously understood ideas such as intelligence, free will, or personhood. Tools such as generative artificial intelligence are infiltrating our lives to the point of wresting control of innately human spiritual, mental, and physical ways of being. Algorithmic systems of oppression that further marginalise underrepresented communities reiterate the urgent need to build tangible alternatives that centre care, community and solidarity.

Groundbreaking artists working at the complex intersection of art, tech, and community are uniquely positioned to address these challenges by launching projects that foster dialogue and engagement and further the imagination. Eyebeam seeks artists to explore the creative potentials of technologies that support and enhance the best of human intelligence and imagination. In particular, they are interested in supporting those artists whose efforts consider the impact of technology on individuals and communities who face additional barriers to access and inclusion.

Adopting a human-centric approach to technology, led by artists, can ensure that future technology is developed and used to promote human well-being and agency rather than corporate consumption. The aim is to launch more humane uses of technology that allow space for contemplation, understanding, and aesthetic imagination.

Eyebeam’s open call is addressed to artists working deeply in the areas mentioned above, particularly those working within or developing technology that focuses on decolonisation, reframing history, language, care, the digital divide, and the future of tech.

Selected artists participating in this six-month programme will receive a $20,000 stipend and work in fellowship to support the development and implementation of their projects. Eyebeam will select five non-New York-based artists from anywhere in the world and five NYC-based artists. The fellowship is digital-first, but will hybridise online and in-person components, including workshops, mentorship sessions, and networking opportunities.

Deadline: 1 October 2023

More info and apply: https://eyebeam.submittable.com/submit/ebfae09a-16bd-43be-82be-cedfe1e1612d/2024-eyebeam-democracy-machine-fellowship-open-call

CCA - Canadian Centre for Architecture: ‘In the Hurricane, On the Land’ Research Programme (Canada / Online)

The CCA-Mellon Multidisciplinary Research Programme seeks new and urgent modes of orientation that ask earthbound designers and their allies to ground and value land: lands held by others in care and lands that have been claimed, reclaimed, and not ceded. It is a call to undertake research and design projects that are site-specific, climate-dependent, historically attuned, and collaborative. As a collective and all-encompassing state, being ‘in the hurricane’ calls for grounded, land-caring practices that match the intensity of the storm.

Land-dependent design practices that focus on shaping land through social and ecological relationships hold the potential to create, support, and advocate for lands that ensure our survival in an increasingly divided world. This call seeks practitioners and researchers working across landscape architecture, and allied practices who value how land is anchored by community building, situated interventions, and defined by everyday ecological realities. It seeks to foreground regenerative land practices that cut across disciplinary boundaries between architects and landscape architects to centre ecological conditions such as soil health, geology, botany, and more.

Topics participants may address include, but are not limited to:

Redefinitions and expansions of landscape architecture as a practice, particularly in relation to the climate crisis.

Learning from existing regenerative, restorative, and/or reparative land practices.

Role of Indigenous, migrant, and other communities that have been separated from land.

Collective memory and displacement from land.

Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest, a 30-minute drive South of Louisville, KY is thrilled to announce the launch of L+A+N+D (Landscape + Art + Nature + Design), an exciting new initiative that annually celebrates innovative design concepts for immersive outdoor installations on a grand scale that will spark imaginations, conversations, and a deeper appreciation of the natural world.

Designed and constructed by artists, architects, landscape architects, designers, and creatives, successful L+A+N+D proposals provide experiences with topics addressing humans – connection to nature, beauty in the landscape, biodiversity, conservation, sustainability, and climate change.

Bernheim seeks regional, national, and international proposals from creatives of all kinds, with the broadest range of diverse perspectives and experiences. While not required, applicants are encouraged to form multidisciplinary teams with (but not limited to) other artists, architects, designers, ecologists, scientists, and/or engineers.

To encourage submissions from emerging and established applicants, Bernheim has two tiers of entry categories, where more extensive construction warrants a higher materials and production budget. Tier 1 proposals will be funded with a total 30,000 USD, and Tier 2 proposals with a total 15,000 USD.

For the first time, the 2023-2024 Artist Residency at 500 Capp Street will be an open call to international, national and local artists with generous multi-year support from the Sanger Family Foundation.

This five-month residency programme at 500 Capp Street in San Francisco, CA will begin in autumn 2023 and end in spring 2024, with some flexibility. Suggested start date of the residency is November or January. Artists will have three months for research and an additional two months for a final project. The focus of this year’s programme is to create work highlighting experimentation that expands the boundaries of genre, medium and material. The residency is intended to give creative space for developing and building ideas.

The selected artist(s) will use The House as their live or work studio, have access to The Paule Anglim Archive Room and David Ireland Archive (time capsules of Bay Area Conceptual Art from 1975-2009), and consult with curator Lian Ladia on their final project. The project can include research, exhibition, installation, or a public intervention in the house and/or the surrounding neighbourhood; or a presentation of their research through a talk or symposium. The artist(s) will be supported throughout the residency and afterward by the staff and resources of The House, extending the impact of the programme far beyond the five-month period. There will be a $10,000 travel stipend and honoraria for the individual or collective, and up to a $10,000 production budget.

Deadline: 30 August 2023

More info and apply: https://500cappstreet.org/uncategorized/2023-artist-residency-open-call/

Frame Curatorial Research Fellowship 2023–2024 (USA / Netherlands)

Frame is seeking candidates for two fellowships in 2023–2024: the Curating with Pasts fellowship hosted by the Queens Museum in New York City, and Soils, organised with Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. Both fellowships involve 4 months of work time, between autumn 2023 and spring 2024.

The Frame Curatorial Research Fellowships offer support for developing new curatorial research practices and cultivating active practices embedded in an organisational context. It explores what kind of curatorial research is needed in order to imagine new ways of presenting and mediating contemporary art and cultural production in forms inseparable from daily life, politics and the policies of artists and institutions.

The Curating with Pasts fellowship hosted by Frame Contemporary Art Finland and the Queens Museum in New York City, looks into different cultural and geopolitical pasts as well as material realities as a point of departure for curatorial research and artistic imaginaries. The fellowship rethinks how historical shifts between the New York World Fairs’ cultural exchange (1939–40 and 1964–65), Cold War dichotomies, and 90s globalisation can resonate with and inform artistic, curatorial and institutional practices today.

The Soils Fellowship is hosted by Frame Contemporary Art Finland and Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The Soils Fellowship involves a focus on a long-term research and exhibition project that will have its Dutch public presentation starting in June 2024. The project is a collaboration with TarraWarra Museum of Art in Healesville (exhibition opening in August 2023), Australia and Struggles for Sovereignty based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia (festival opening in 2025).

The Fellowships include:

Support for the research and introduction to the partners’ contexts.

12,000 EUR working grant for 4 months for each fellow between Autumn 2023 and Spring 2024.

Two to three research visits hosted by Frame and the collaborating partner.

Small production budget to present the research, in the form of e.g. seminar, talk or text.

Deadline: 13 August 2023

More info and apply: https://frame-finland.fi/en/open-call-frame-curatorial-research-fellowship-3/

Dialekt: Call for Nordic Residency Exchange (Denmark, Sweden, Canada)

With the newly established project Dialekt - An exploration of international co-creation in audiovisual artistic expression and performance, three partners across three countries come together in order to present a call-out for artists to travel, develop a project in residency, and perform at each location – at Sound Art Lab in Struer, Denmark, Inkonst in Malmö, Sweden, and Eastern Bloc in Montreal, Canada.

Dialekt grew out of a curiosity for exploration of co-creation across sectors, aiming to foster a framework that can allow artists active in the fields of digital art and experimental sonic practices to experience fruitful exchanges and professional development within their own practice whilst connecting with institutions, collaborators and audiences in regions that they otherwise wouldn’t necessarily have access to.

The focus of innovation for this project lies very much in the forefront for all of the involved partners. Both Sound Art Lab, Inkonst and Eastern Bloc, are all pushing forward-thinking projects in and around their overlapping programmes of digital arts, sonic arts and electronic music, and constantly support implementing changes for developing new techniques and tools in these areas. Although the chosen artists that will be selected for this programme around exchange and co-creation might have different backgrounds, workflows and strategies, they will be tied together by striving towards exploring new technologies, aesthetics, shapes and forms within their artistic practice.

Interdisciplinary and sound artists, audiovisual performers, experimental electronic composers and musicians are invited to submit proposals of projects currently in development to be completed, or improvisational practices that could be further worked upon during three shorter residency periods, all concluding in live performance opportunities across three countries. Individuals residing in Denmark, Sweden, and in the province of Quebec can apply.

Selected applicants will spend a total of about 3 weeks in residence divided between the different centres in order to further develop and build upon live performance structures and explore audiovisual tools and techniques, to ultimately publicly present their work during different stages of their project as part of public events. Travel and accommodation will be covered between all three locations, and artists will be received a total compensation of 2100$ CAD / 16,895 SEK / 10,803 DKK including per diem covering meal
and incidental expenses, residency and public presentation fees.

Deadline: 23 June 2023

More info and apply: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1g1Af3B4ui7ev7P4QPTDkBbWbFynd0u63

CIMAM launches an international call for travel grant applications to attend the CIMAM 2023 Annual Conference in Buenos Aires.

CIMAM’s 2023 Annual Conference will be held from 9-11 November 2023, hosted by the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, Argentina. CIMAM will award over 50 travel grants to attend the CIMAM 2023 Annual Conference, titled ‘The Co-Creative Museum: Social Agency, Ethics, and Heritage’.

The competition for influence is getting ever fiercer with both friendly rivals and hostile competitors investing in and innovating how they build trust and attractiveness internationally.

The aims of cultural relations, as drivers of international development, peacebuilding, and bridges of communication during difficult times in international relations, are more important than ever.

But what cultural relations approaches are countries implementing? What policies, institutions and activities are in play?

British Council commissioned ICR Research to undertake research focusing on understanding the current status and competitive space of cultural relations and soft power. This included how the UK compares to analogues in each country of operation in terms of foreign ministry activities, educational and cultural institutions as well as international broadcasting operations.

This new report based on their research considers the soft power and cultural relations policies, approaches and institutions of Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Qatar, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, UAE, UK, USA and the EU.

The fellowships will take place 5 September - 30 November 2023 are designed to provide professional development and hands-on experience for early-career curators and producers interested in performance and its related discourses.
Three selected participants will receive direct insight into the workings of Performa’s artist-centric commissioning programme and work directly with the Performa team in New York, learning Performa’s methods for presenting, and preserving performance by visual artists in the lead up to the Performa Biennial that will take place from 1-19 November 2023.

The Project Space is a studio workspace for artists working primarily but not exclusively in photography, book art, film, and media art. Each year, a committee of VSW staff and outside artists and curators review applications and select up to 20 artists for 4-week terms.

The Project Space provides artists the opportunity to experiment with new work and new display strategies, and to have discussions with VSW staff, critics, curators, and the community-at-large about works-in-progress. An introductory event within the VSW community and a public talk or open studio are organised to engage the public with the visiting artist’s work and ideas.

Two artists are usually in residence at a time: a local/regionally-based, and a national/international artist who is housed in an apartment within walking distance to VSW. Each artist receives 24hr access to a private studio, a stipend of $1000, a $500 travel budget for those from outside the region, and a supplies budget of $250. Residents receive the support of VSW’s digital printing technician, program assistants, consultations with photography, book art, and media art curators on staff, as well as research support in VSW’s collections.

The residency is open to all adults except those enrolled in higher education programs at the time of the residency.

Deadline: 2 April 2023

More info and apply: https://www.vsw.org/exhibitions/projectspace/

Interledger Foundation: Future|Money Grant to Reimagine Outdated Financial Systems (USA)

The Interledger Foundation (ILF) believes that financial inclusion is a right, not a privilege and that financial systems should work for everyone, everywhere. They are stewards of the (Interledger Protocol or ILP), an open standard, built on the interconnectivity of the web to create an open payments network, making all systems and services interoperable, inclusive, and accessible.

The ILF are building a community of creators and innovators to realise a future where how you earn or share money and where you live do not impact the financial services you can access. ILF recognise the critical role of artists in reflecting the voice of communities, excluded from systems that do not serve them.

Their ambition for global financial inclusion relies on visionary artists to imagine a future where it already exists. To inspire people to believe change is possible and activate change in old systems, with new thinking.

FUTURE|MONEY, the first open grant opportunity for 2023, seeks artists of any discipline to reimagine outdated financial systems that currently exclude 1.7 billion people from accessing essential services to make and receive payments. ILF ask artists to envision a world where financial systems were built to serve everyone, everywhere, always. Where borders aren’t barriers to supporting each other financially as well as emotionally. Where services aren’t built in silos and organisations are intentionally interoperable. All expressions of that future are welcomed

This grant opportunity will fund up to eight projects at $25,000 USD over an eight-month project timeline. The final results will be exhibited during the ILF Summit 2023; a travel stipend for the artist will be provided by the Interledger Foundation.

Deadline: 24 March 2023

More info and apply: https://submit.interledger.org/submit/253442/futuremoney-2023-grant-application
