DutchCulture’s Dutch-Russian online conference Sustainable Dialogues 2021 will take place 4-6 October 2021. They are now calling for applications from students of cultural disciplines and early-career museum, art and heritage professionals interested in creating international museum projects and participating in expertise-building workshops, focusing specifically on Dutch-Russian museum cooperation.

Sustainable Dialogues 2021 is the latest edition of the series that started in Amsterdam in 2016 and Saint-Petersburg in 2018. The project brings together Dutch and Russian museum professionals in order to exchange ideas and best practices and to promote the continuity of cultural cooperation between the professionals of the two countries.

The conference is designed to attract new generations of museum professionals and discuss local and international community building with a museum focus. It aims at reflecting on the cutting-edge museum practices and strategies in reference to the most relevant and urgent museum themes of our days. Therefore the representatives of leading Russian and Dutch museums will be joined by the younger, upcoming generation of museum professionals in order to share their knowledge of the best practices in the two countries and start up dialogues for future cooperation.

The conference and workshops will develop around three main themes:

Contested histories in museums.

The role of museums in community building in times of COVID and beyond.

Biodiversity, climate change and sustainability in museums and heritage sites.

During the workshops, groups of participants will present their ideas and brainstorm together about Dutch-Russian projects around the three main themes of the conference. The process will be moderated by experienced cultural professionals who will share their expert knowledge and ideas with the participants.

Successful candidates (18-35 years old) should be pursuing culture-related studies or have experience working in museums or cultural institutions. Proficiency in English, the working language of the conference, is a must, as well as the willingness to commit to the programme and spend several hours a day at the conference.

The most active and creative participants will be able to join a professional visitors programme funded and organised by DutchCulture in the Netherlands in 2022.

Deadline: 31 July 2021

More info and apply: https://dutchculture.nl/en/sustainable-dialogues-2021-open-call-museum-professionals

Mobility Funding Guide to the Netherlands

A guide to cross-border mobility for artists and cultural workers from and travelling to Netherlands.

This cultural mobility funding guide has been produced by DutchCulture in collaboration with On the Move. It lists national, local and international resources from both public and private funders. Two kinds of opportunity are included: outgoing and incoming. The outgoing opportunities are for nationals and residents of Netherlands wishing to travel outside the country. The incoming opportunities are for nationals from other countries who want to travel to Netherlands.

The guide only lists regular opportunities that are accessible online (for instance for touring, residencies, collaborations, training, etc.). Funds where information is only available offline, schemes which do not use open calls, and one-off or short-term funding programmes are not included.

Since 2011, On the Move has published 60 funding guides focusing on specific countries or world regions. They aim to make information on mobility funding clear and accessible, letting artists and cultural operators explore the field of opportunities. By gathering a large body of information in one place, they also help funders and policymakers to see how support is structured and to notice any shortfalls.

These guides are always produced with partners, organisations and/or researchers who have a close relationship to the region, and we try to make them as complete as possible. If you see something is missing and it meets our editorial policy, then you can email mobility@on-the-move.org

DutchCulture: Fair International Cultural Cooperation – Language

Fair International Cultural Cooperation is a series of gatherings with which DutchCulture and international partners explore the possibility of an internationally sourced and accepted code of conduct. Each gathering covers a specific theme: funding in 2018, climate change in 2019, and language this year, on 18 September in Amsterdam, during the Forum on European Culture.

When working abroad and collaborating internationally, cultural practitioners enter a space which is already characterised by cultural differences and structural power inequalities. One of these inequalities arise from the use of language. This can happen in three ways:

The chosen language of communication usually benefits one party over the other.

The used vocabulary determines how the message is valued.

The meaning of the words used varies depend on one’s cultural background.

DutchCulture call upon international cultural directors, artists, thinkers, scientists, critics, policymakers and funders with a focus on language issues and who are actively invested in the topic of fair international cultural cooperation to gather and discuss how international cooperation can be organised in a way that is fair in respect of the usage of language.

It is possible to participate digitally or in person during the discussion on 18 September 2020. DutchCulture is also able to cover travel expenses up to 500 EUR for six visitors who are non-EU/US residents with good English language skills. These visitors will also participate in an extended programme 16-18 September 2020 whch will give them the possibility to expand their network and experience Dutch examples in the field of art and language.

Deadline: 2 July 2020

More info and apply: https://dutchculture.nl/nl/news/fair/EN

DutchCulture gathered 40 international experts in Amsterdam to discuss values and practicalities of fair(er) international cultural cooperation.

This closed meeting at Broedplaats Lely in Amsterdam followed the publication of the toolkit Beyond Curiosity and Desire: Towards Fairer International Collaborations in the Arts earlier in 2018, by IETM with On the Move and DutchCulture, focused on issues influencing expectations and engagement in international and intercultural activities.

As a next step in addressing the points raised by the toolkit, the meeting aimed at offering an opportunity for funders and institutions to discuss and exchange their perspectives, as well as develop shared intelligence to move forward in embedding such practices in our respective organisations and ways of working.

En français

In collaboration with On the Move and DutchCulture, IETM has published a new Toolkit for fairer international collaborations, written by Mike van Graan. The publication explores why and how artists and cultural professionals can adopt a more equitable approach to international and intercultural collaborations.

Many contemporary arts professionals and organisations increasingly engage in international activities, ranging from joint projects to exchanges, from residencies to co-productions. However, misunderstandings and false assumptions are very common, and can complicate the process, if not undermine the results. While the most obvious issue in international artistic and cultural collaborations is economic disparity, other elements deserve to be carefully considered, including historical links between countries, different political contexts, technical infrastructure and skills, freedom to travel, living and working conditions, aesthetics, traditions, among others. All these issues influence expectations and engagement. Only honest, and at times uncomfortable, conversations can clarify such issues and build trust between partners.

As international collaborations are the raison d’être of our three organisations, we have joined forces to produce this Toolkit. We have asked an arts professional with outstanding expertise, Mike van Graan, to produce a text that offers a comprehensive overview of relevant issues through a combination of practical case studies and theoretical references. The toolkit provides food for thought for artists and cultural professionals, and hopes to feed the discussion between policy-makers and funders. Overall, we aim to contribute to making international artistic collaborations more equal, meaningful and enriching.

This reflection will continue in collaboration with the NGO Culture et Développement through monthly articles on this topic to be published on their website Territoires Associés, le développement par la culture as per June 2018.
