PEN America, a non-profit organisation working at the intersection of literature and human rights, is seeking to fill two senior manager positions:

Senior Manager, Protection Programs to drive forward their work protecting artists at risk around the world. The role will develop a new emergency grant-making initiative through the Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) programme and expand PEN America’s protection programmes for individuals in peril because of their creative expression. The ideal candidate will have the vision, expertise, and programme management skills to shape ARC’s protection efforts, collaborating with the ARC team and the PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Center. The role requires experience working with individuals at risk or otherwise vulnerable communities, and a demonstrated commitment to the arts and human rights internationally.
Senior Manager, International Programs to strengthen and lead their work to fortify and expand the Artist at Risk Connection (ARC)’s international programmes. The role will oversee ARC’s regional hubs and expand PEN America’s international reach in order to grow the network of organisations and individuals providing assistance to at-risk artists. The ideal candidate will have the vision, expertise, and programme management skills to shape ARC’s international programmes and manage ARC’s regional representatives, while also collaborating with the ARC team and the PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Center. The role requires strong project management skills, and a demonstrated commitment to the arts and human rights internationally.

Both are new full-time positions expected to be based at PEN America’s New York office. PEN America offers competitive compensation and benefits, commensurate with experience.

ARC - Artists at Risk Connection: Senior Manager & Regional Representative Positions

PEN America’s Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) currently has several open job positions:

Senior Manager, Protection Programs

The senior manager for protection programs will drive forward ARC’s work to protect artists at risk around the world. The role will develop a new emergency grantmaking initiative and expand PEN America and ARC’s protection programs for individuals in peril because of their creative expression. The role requires experience working with individuals at risk or otherwise vulnerable communities, ideally in the protection field, and a demonstrated commitment to the arts and human rights internationally. This is a new full-time position expected to be based at PEN America’s New York office. The position reports to the Director, Artists at Risk Connection.

Senior Manager, International Programs

The senior manager for international programs will strengthen and lead ARC’s work to fortify and expand its international programs. The role will oversee ARC’s four regional representatives and hubs - including the Amani: Africa Creative Defence Network and PAR (Protección de Artistas en Riesgo) – América Latina y el Caribe - and expand their international reach in order to grow the network of organizations and individuals providing assistance to at-risk artists. The role requires strong management skills, and a demonstrated commitment to the arts and human rights internationally. This is a new full-time position, expected to be based at PEN America’s New York office. The position reports to the Director, Artists at Risk Connection.

Regional Representative for Africa

The regional representative for Africa will lend critical regional expertise to the ARC team and strengthen ARC’s hub in the region (which includes Northern Africa and sub-Saharan Africa), deepen existing regional partnerships and build new ones, and assist in cases of at-risk artists where needed. The ideal candidate will have strong independent project management skills, experience in coalition or network building, is already quite active in their own artistic or human rights community, and be eager to take on new projects and tackle challenges. This is a consultant position based in the region and requires a minimum one-year commitment.

Regional Representative for the Middle East

The regional representative for the Middle East will lend critical regional expertise to the ARC team and develop an active hub in the Middle East region, deepen existing regional partnerships and build new ones, and assist in cases of at-risk artists where needed. The individual may also assist with the Arabic translation of A Safety Guide for Artists. The ideal candidate will have strong independent project management skills, experience in coalition or network building, is already quite active in their own artistic or human rights community, and be eager to take on new projects and tackle challenges. This is a consultant position based in the region and requires a minimum one-year commitment.

A Safety Guide for Artists

When an artist first faces risk, there are not a lot of roadmaps: the experience can be incredibly isolating and disorienting. ARC - Artists at Risk Connection’s A Safety Guide for Artists explores topics such as defining and understanding risk, preparing for threats, fortifying digital safety, documenting persecution, finding assistance, and recovering from trauma.

Tips and strategies were drawn from testimony of artists who have faced persecution, including Cuban performance artist Tania Bruguera, Lebanese singer Hamed Sinno, American visual artist Dread Scott, and Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu, as well as the research and expertise of ARC’s vast network of partners.

Artists at Risk Connection: Africa Regional Representative

ARC – Artists at Risk Connection, a project of PEN America, a non-profit organisation working at the intersection of literature and human rights, seeks a talented, energetic, and highly organised regional representative in Africa. ARC is a support system for artists facing threats as a result of their creative expression. This is a part-time consultant position that can be based anywhere in Africa.

The successful candidate will grow and strengthen a dynamic regional network in Africa in order to ensure that ARC’s partners are diverse, representative, and responsive in this region.

ARC manages a coordination and information-sharing hub that supports, unites, and advances the work of organisations that provide assistance to artists at risk of persecution globally. ARC’s mission is to improve access to resources for artists at risk, enhance connections among supporters of artistic freedom, and raise awareness about challenges to artistic freedom.

The Regional Representative will:

Coordinate the Amani protective network, an ARC-led consortium of organisations working in or on artistic freedom in Africa.
Lead local outreach to artists, human rights, and art organisations in the region as ARC develops its network of assistance for persecuted artists.
Support the ARC team’s urgent assistance efforts by referring artist cases to international support and connecting artists to local and regional resources.
Promote opportunities for the local arts community to have a global impact and for the international network of organisations to support artists at risk more locally.

This is a consultant role that would be suitable for an individual who is already quite active in their own artistic or human rights community, is interested in developing their own regional network, and is excited about the idea of shaping and initiating more international projects and collaborations. The position requires a minimum one-year commitment.

The Artists at Risk Connection (ARC), PEN America’s newest initiative, is an online collaborative project encompassing more than 500 global organizations that provide resources that can help save the lives of threatened artists. Through this online hub artists and organizations alike now have a clear, easily navigable website from which to network or seek further assistance. ARC is a supportive environment, where artists can “connect,” fostering progress towards positive change in human rights.

Resources available for threatened artists include: fellowships, emergency support, housing, training, and advocacy, among others. ARC is committed to improving resources for artists at risk, enhancing connections among supporters of artistic freedom, and raising awareness about artistic freedom.
